Hypermotard 821

  1. Dear All,
Just looking for some help / information please.
I recently bought a low mileage Hypermotard 821 on a 2014 plate. I'd covered approximately a 100 miles. When stopped at some traffic lights the dash lit up like a Christmas tree, it became evident the bike had gone into limp mode. Fortunately I wasn't far from home. At that point I switched the ignition off, the indicator were flashing for approximately a minute. Cut a long story short, looks like something has affected / damaged the ECU, the bike doesn't start the fuel pump doesn't kick in on turn of the key.
looking on Youtube, there's some suggestion the cause could be a spike from the coil packs? Fortunately, the shop has collected the bike and are going to repair it (great). The ECU can be replaced, but without finding the cause, its possible it could happen again! I'd appreciate any thoughts, advice, on other possible causes.
    Many thanks...... john.

  2. There was a possible issue with the ecu getting spiked by the coils. There was a tech update to install a filter in to the wiring to protect the CANBUS. Worth checking with your dealer if this was/has been done.
Once out of warranty, any bikes that dropped out of the network for service would have missed it? Quite a few did, especially low milers….
It does the ecu but can also do the dash. It’s important the coils are changed also.

  3. Many thanks Nelly, I did find the other post in this section. I don't think it will have had the update. I'll pass this on to the shop I bought it from.
