Tinkering Or Riding?

  1. Some of you may be aware of my earlier posts when I explained how I was no longer enjoying riding my bikes in the UK anymore and this had been coming over the last couple of years ie. it was not a spur of the moment thing. I’ve just watched the video of the 916 at Lougi Moto being started after 17 years asleep and I found it fascinating and informative. I always enjoyed tinkering with my bikes, increasingly so in recent years. Nothing too technical or advanced but fitting quality aftermarket parts to make the bikes more personal for example. I also found great pleasure in fitting 12v power sockets and sat nav mounts to both bikes. Nothing astonishing but useful nonetheless. Perhaps it might be regarded as a guilty pleasure but I realised I was enjoying spending time fiddling in the garage more than I enjoyed riding. I am still interested in bikes, especially Italian ones btw. So my question is: does anyone else feel this way or is it just me?

  4. I do enjoy both riding and tinkering, though l didn't do much of either this year -after the arrival of my little boat, I spent the weekends on the water...

Its great having the bikes, and I expect I'll ride more next summer.

  5. I like both in equal measure, I love riding my bikes but the maintenance/ repairs/ mods side of ownership give me great pleasure too.

  6. I'm the same, I enjoy garage time and riding time equally, I tend to spend more time tinkering though as I have other vehicle projects that always need attention

  7. Both for me, but prefer riding!
My tinkering is limited by comparison too many on here, things like swapping exhausts out, fitting new indicators etc.

  8. I keep my bikes standard and put lots of miles on them.

  9. I also see maintenance as tinkering... so the more you ride the more you need to tinker... :)

  10. Funnily enough I watched that video last night on YouTube and loved it, perhaps even more as as I previously the 996 in my pic.

I'm currently building my M900 from boxes that I've owned for over 10 years (in that state) and am really enjoying it as its a complete change from my day job working in secondary adult mental healthcare. Nothing better than going up to the man-cave and working (slowly) on the bike with the YT or the stereo on and getting away from all the worlds problems. Taking up the rest of the space is my WW2 Jeep which is next on the list to work on then the tdr, then dt.....

    Fun times! :)

  14. Whilst I can afford to, I pay a man to tinker with my bike so I can ride it more often. Andy

  15. I enjoy tinkering when I'm tinkering, and riding when I'm riding. The bad bit is sitting in front of a screen all day to fund it.

  16. I must admit to maybe tinkering a bit too much. Rounding around in Yorkshire doesn’t do much for me anymore but a good European blast this year made me realise how good biking could be.

  17. You should live in the SE of England and you would realise how great the Yorkshire roads are in comparison!

(That said Europe tops the uk still)

  18. Not sure the SE could offer better roads than in Yorkshire but I totally agree with the European part. The worst roads in northern Germany are light years better than our best roads.

  19. I think you misunderstood his post. The way I read it he says yorkshires roads are better than the SE.
P.S. Lincolnshire's are even better but the scenery is better in Yorkshire

  20. I’ve been touring all over Europe for over 25 years always leaving via Dublin ferry to Holyhead and down through England. But what with road works,50mph speed limits, speed cameras, and the border arseholes at the Chunnel I gave up. We now leave from cork to roscoff
