Question About Ulez

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by higgy748, Nov 8, 2023.

  1. I'm flying from Heathrow in December and using a hotel for overnight stays and parking.
I have checked and the wife's car is alegedly ULEZ compliant.
Do I have to register the car with Tfl before I enter the little shits empire

  2. No need to register even if it’s not compliant as drivers can make one off payments.

  3. Your car, and over 90% of all cars... Very few people are actually affected by it...

  4. Which makes you wonder why, if only 10% of vehicles are polluters, London’s air quality was so dangerous that ULEZ needed to be expanded. It’s almost as if the study which claimed 4,000 Londoners die from poor air quality was utterly bogus and the whole thing is a massive ideologically driven white elephant which is more about virtue signalling and Khan’s arrogant, stubborn refusal to change his mind than anything else.

  5. It'll be going to pay per mile for everyone eventually. No one will be exempt.

  6. We already do, tax when you buy the vehicle, fuel tax, annual road tax, tax on annual insurance premiums, tax on annual mot, tax on any running part you buy/replace during its lifetime.

But let’s not forget what joy ownership brings.

  7. I recall reading somewhere that the ‘independent ‘ research body that provides some key data was coincidentally the recipient of an unlinked Sizeable donation from London council somehow and the data was never put up for independent scientific scrutiny prior to publishing with coincidentally the answer that Khan wanted to hear.

  8. Yep. An £800k, ahem, “donation”. The 4,000 deaths PA figure is just risible, to the point where it looks as if they don’t really care about exaggerating in the same post-truth way Trump or BoJo would just make stuff up in the knowledge that very few people check these things and in any case, the rebuttal won’t get anywhere near as much publicity as the lie. Btw - the actual number of deaths since 2001 in which environmental air pollution is mentioned on a death certificate is one.

Also, another group of scientists, also from Imperial but not in hock to TFL, conducted a study to examine the effect of the existing ULEZ on air quality. They found that there was, at best, a 3% improvement. The Mayor’s response to this report was to get one of his deputies to persuade their tame bought and paid for scientist to discredit his colleagues’ findings.

  9. I think this is the real reason for the ULEZ as it allows all the infrastructure for universal road use charging to be sneaked in as a kind of Trojan horse. If everyone ditches petrol and diesel vehicles for EVs then the Treasury loses c.£37bn in fuel duty, so pay to drive is the only feasible way to recoup that lost revenue.

  10. Thanks Zhed. I knew there was more detail but I couldn’t find it easily-I’m meant to be doing my accounts.
You’ve explained it much more eloquently than I.

  11. Just out the crack of my arse, 4000 sounds about right for... smoking? That'd be 'poor air quality'.

  15. Transport for London are making billions out of ULEZ which is lining someone’s pockets because I see little evidence if it being reinvested in London. Amazes me that if Khan is so unpopular with Londoners that he remains in post. Andy

  16. I got dinged for dropping off at T5 and driving away. Had I noticed the signage I would have paid the £5 charge. Sadly the penalty was £80, reduced to £40 for prompt payment.
Normally I ride to any LHR or LGW flight, park for free in the terminal car park for the trip duration and then ride home.

  17. Don’t go giving the tiny tyrant ideas now…..o_O

  18. Looks like we might not be all that wide of the mark. Of course, he’s denying all knowledge but then again he brought in the ULEZ extension after saying there were no plans to do so.
