Hello all. Can anyone help with a question relating to the standard fairing screen (windshield in Ducati speak) for a 2004 998s Final Edition. The one fitted to my bike is marked with Pt No. 48710111A, unfortunately it has a small break on the end edge of the plastic around one of the screw holes so I am thinking of replacing it. According to Ducati parts lists, this Pt No. is actually for a 2002 998/998R model whereas the one for the 2004 Final Edition (and Matrix) is listed as Pt No. 48710301A (this one is also significantly more expensive than the other). My question is: does anyone know what the actual difference is between the two types? (I am guessing maybe material?). I know this is a long shot but I am intrigued because I thought they were all the same. Thanks for your help.
@Alan998 I was faced with the same issue earlier this year on my 998S (cosmetic break on the edge of the plastic skirt around one of the mounting points, non visible when the windscreen is fitted) and despite the purchase of a new windscreen from the factory (being part code 48710111A) it seems that I'll be keeping my old one. More on this here: https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/altuglas-windshield-old-vs-new.97274/ Concerning your enquiry, part number 48710111A refers to the clear windscreen which is factory fitted to most examples of the 748/916/996/998 range. Part number 48710301A refers to the partly blacked-out windscreen (over the speedometer assembly), which was factory fitted to the 998SFE and the Matrix as regards the 998 range specifically. Photos of both follow below. The mounting points are positioned the same on both said part codes, and all windscreens for the 748/916/996/998 range are interchangeable on all models without any modifications (with any part code variance being attributed to model specific cosmetic and/or livery changes).
Nick, thanks for that info. I had never noticed the blacked-out bit before but now, looking at pictures of FE's on-line, it certainly stands out. Guess my bike had an incorrect replacement screen fitted at some point in time. Thanks again for providing a detailed explanation.
I believe that the black-out strip (in its darkest version) was first seen on the windscreen of the 916SPS Foggy Rep (as early as 1996) to show piece the emblematic "Foggy eyes" livery. In the later models (and in faded/toned down versions), the factory thought that it also served a purpose (rather than just marketing), as it provides near complete coverage for the otherwise visible wiring at the back the speedo assembly (the benefit of which with and without can be seen below).
