I'm looking at 87mm pistons, Mdina have them but they're pricey! Are there other options? Wiseco used to be well regarded but I read somewhere that the newer ones are too heavy ( I think the info was at Bevelheaven but the forum is down). Have any of you replaced pistons recently? What did you use? The last time I replaced pistons was 1986/7!
Do your research.....there are some pistons on the UK market that smoke from new. Piston rings not designed for cast iron liners basically...
Omega pistons from Lacey Ducati - I've used them with no issue and you get installation instructions with rebore specs. I notice that Omega don't recommend fully synthetic oil for the running in period as it can prevent the rings from bedding in correctly. https://laceyducati.com/ducati-part...203_206/450-roadrace-piston-865mm-p-1161.html
Hi Paddy. Yes I know the ones you are talking about, I'm amazed they haven't been withdrawn really. Thanks guys. It’s Omega pistons that I’ve heard horror stories about though.
That's a surprise considering that Nigel Lacey stocks Omegas for all the singles.... perhaps the Omega oil recommendation has to be diligently followed.
Gave you the wrong link as this is the 87mm road piston as a 'direct replacement to the original equipment 900 SS / Darmah Borgo piston" and I notice they also say "These high quality Omega Piston designs that we supply are manufactured specifically for us." It wouldn't harm just calling Nigel up for a chat. He's a good guy to talk to. https://laceyducati.com/ducati-part...9_305_203_205/450-road-piston-87mm-p-546.html
Oh yes ...... and their customer service comes well below what I've come to expect from other parts suppliers . IMO - they are just trading on a well-known and long established name ( I'm speaking from experience ). I'd recommend contacting this man - John Fallon ..... he was actually the founder of Mdina , then sold it on . He's still in business but now trades as - http://www.madeinitalymotorcycles.com He is passionate about bevel-drive bikes and knows them inside and out . A top bloke to do business with , and always happy to chat ......
