996 Open Clutch Covers

  1. What is the fascination with open clutch covers?

My 916 has the stock cover, but, my recently purchased 996 has an open cover

To me, the open covers are an accident waiting to happen, and they make the engine sound more rattly

  2. Took the Ducabike one off my 1098 and went stock.

In a way it's a shame because it's a lovely looking clutch (EVR Slipper), but I prefer it - it's quieter for sure.

  3. It’s faster innit :joy: must be coz that’s what racing bikes used to have and it’s lighter.

A facetious answer but that’s probably why a lot of people have them - aesthetics and how they want their bike to look.

On a serious note there is an argument it prevents dust build up internally. The flip side of that of course is that if you ride it in the rain and then put it away rust will form on the steel plates but, just as with your brakes, it goes as soon as it’s used again.

  4. Who doesn't like the look of the spinning clutch? Also it does help them run a bit cooler. Plus you only hear it when stationary/idling so it's never a problem.

  7. Now that is just wrong. It needs some sort of cover. I did wonder why you thought it was a possible accident waiting to happen but then thought no-one would be that daft to just remove the cover and not replace it with a vented ‘open’ version. I guess there’s no accounting for some people.

  8. And some people have the cheek to moan about clear clutch covers :D

  9. Also when it gets wet after being left out in the rain for a long period, god forbid, it slips under acceleration until it’s dried off.

  10. I don't know about anyone else's but mine gets immensely hot... It has a billet aluminium cover, very weighty and with all that mass it's still red hot to the touch. It's well vented, I cannot imagine how hot and dusty it would get if sealed...

Coincidently I took a look in there yesterday, and I'm definitely going to need a new pack sometime this season. It's looking pretty beaten up in there. Looks like the original clutch from the 1999 manufacture date. Nasty and not a little crusty...

Any recommendations for a nice and shiny Slipper unit to replace it with ? Anyone got a good one they want to send to a good home ?

  13. If you run a slipper clutch on track you will be surprised about the amount of dust that is kicked out. And if you are really using the slipper part it really needs the air flow.

  17. When I replaced the stock dry clutch on the 998S with a slipper STM Evoluzzione 90mm (paired with an STM clutch slave cylinder), removing the clutch cover significantly reduced the temperature in the area.

  18. I had a Monster with the open clutch cover, and it did sound good with the unmistakable Ducati rattle. I dropped it in the gravel at Brands Hatch circuit on a track day and it filled with grit! Enough said I think!

  19. Dropped my new to me 996, with open cover, on the grass, no panels on the bike, so, no damage, but, it left some pretty patterns in the grass
