Obdstar Users

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Bumpkin, Jan 14, 2024.

  1. Thread for users of ODBStar diagnostics units. Namely the OBDStar iScan Ducati model.

Probably the best source for this being the BMDiag as they are UK based and the price isn't far off that compared to ordering one from other sources that are most likely based in the far east, even some with websites with a .co.uk domain. BMDiag not only sell the ODBStar diagnostic tools but offer good support and pre-sales advice for them too.

This thread is for you if you own an OBDStar iScan, you're thinking of ordering one or want to find a member in your area with one who will provide assistance with reading diagnostics, resetting service indicators or activating accessories.

  2. Carried over from a thread that was drifting seriously off course...

Initially mine identified the bike automatically from the VIN encoded into the ECU. Correct me if I'm wrong but I surmise that this is how you're connecting to your bike? After an update to the OBDStar it seemed to stop recognising the bike this way. So I now have to go to the diagnosis level of the menu and choose "Select from Vehicle" rather than "Auto Identify [VIN]".

    Choosing the 2nd option here.
    Screenshot_2024-01-14-14-33-56.png

That then asks me to input serial.

Initially this was is a little confusing, until I realised that the spreadsheet has a column headed "Serial" containing a single alpha or numeric value matching the first character of the corresponding "Model" column. Entering "M" brings up a list of models including all the Multistradas.

Selecting the appropriate one brings up a list of the model year ranges to drill down further.
    Screenshot_2024-01-14-14-35-01.png

Selecting one of these and then clicking OK brings up the list of possible action headings such as; ENG ANS, Meter, Activations, BBS etc.

Clicking on one of these, from experience shows the year/year range again and that then results in the OBDStar trying to connect to the bike.

As this was done at my desk and without the bike plugged in I get the above message.

I haven't tried to connect to mine as anything other than what it is. Not sure if it will let you proceed if it's plugged into a model it's not expecting based on your previous selections?

Last year I did plug it into @bradders' (of this parish) Monster to reset an error light. Can't recall if we tried more than one model on that or not. Being an early model the options were pretty limited though.

  3. Awesome thanks, after I asked the question, I went back to mine for a play around and found those options too.I have not connected to the bike using them either (yet)

Previously I also used the auto selection from reading the VIN. FWIW, even if you select a different option via the search, it is still possible to auto-identify via VIN as well.

It was reading on a Facebook group that apparently the OBD i-scan will not reset the service lights on 2016 DVT's (it will on my 2015), but that selecting the Multistrada Enduro option would allow service light resets on the 2016 DVT that got me thinking.

I have emailed Rob at BMdiag anyway and will see what he comes back with regarding updates and options.

AS at the start of this and how the thread drifted, I have additional Ducati lights I will be fitting that will need enabling. If I can get that from my existing I-scan, it'd be brilliant. Depending on what Rob comes back with, I may try the 1260 options to enable the addition fog lights. I dont see that crashing the ECU (famous last words) :D

I dunno if the ECU's are the same type on 1200/1260's. Maybe that is my next research project.

  4. I really must get that light back off again @Bumpkin now I have the bypass fitted!!

yes I think it was very limited. Don’t remember selected from big list. I use a fox well kit and it rarely works from vin on mine (1997) or neighbours 2014 Astra. So I select from drop downs.

  5. Same make, it's Bosch. Not sure if activations are handled by the main ECU though. You can find the ECU make by looking under ENG for each bike. Though might well be a different Bosch model of ECU... There are more similarities between the two bikes than differences I think.

Possibly more information available if we both plugged into our respective bikes and drilled down further.

  6. I went for the update subscription via Robert at BMDiag. I am now on a November software version. I have not as yet plugged into the DVT, but likely will do this weekend :)

  7. Please come back to us and let us know how you get on with it.

Which model DVT do you have?

  8. So, I updated the OBDstar iScan yesterday and plugged it in to the bike just now. Its a 2015 1200 DVT

I have way more activations available to me than I had before ... including the one i wanted - foglights :)

I have the lights and the genuine Ducati crash bars (I need to to change over as I have SW Motech bars fitted at the mo) so that is a relatively straightforward job to finish off. Knowing the additional lights now function was the main thing. I can hang on now, until it warms up a bit

Someone asked if they stayed on, on full beam as well as dip beam somewhere on here ? Yeah they do.

  9. Glad you got it sorted, might do an update later this year.

If the same as on my 1260 they will need switching on every time you cycle the ignition.

  10. Same on my 1200 DVT.

  11. I may not have been as clear as intended. The additional lights do need switching on every time the bike is turned on. I think the OP was asking if they stayed on when flicking between high and low headlights while riding ? On my static test, yes they will stay on irrespective of headlight switch position. :)

  12. My reply was maybe even vaguer... Was adding the need to switch them on again when turning on the ignition as additional info. Yes, I agree, they say on irrespective of low/high beam status.

  13. This thread has just reminded me to update my OBDStar software. I need to reset the bluetooth DMS, as it currently thinks my bike is a Multistrada, which was the bike the dealer used to activate the module on.

  14. Hi folks. Any news on whether this will hook up with the 2016 MTS DVT yet ? And perform service resets etc ? Ta in advance. Rich.

  15. A few questions if I may. Is there any point in picking one of these up for my 23 V4 Rally if it's not fully supported yet? I think the last V4 to be added was the 22 Pikes Peak. Once the 1 year free updates is up can you still use the unit with all options or do you need to subscribe to use all fufunctions?

  16. They can take a while to add new models and include full functionality.

After the first year you can continue to use all functions available in the last update you applied without renewing the subscription. In my case I don't think there's been anything added for the 1260s Mutley since my sub. expired so I'm not bothering to update. I spoke to BMDiag and I can apply one when/if I need it.

  17. I think it now has comprehensive coverage for the 1200DVT Multistradas. It does for my 2018 1260. I know that, bizarrely, there were a couple of activations missing for the 1200 which at the time were included for the 1260. However, as I understand these are now covered. Best to check the compatability spreadsheet, downloadable from obdstar.com (look under 'manual'), to be sure.

  18. I’m going to get one, seems like it would be useful as I have a Monster and a Multi, and a few mates with ducatis too.

question: can I reset the PIN number with one of these or is that something I need the dealer to do?

  19. Depends on the model. According to the current OBDStar capabilities spreadsheet PIN code reset is available for the DVT Multistradas. Should also be the same for the Monsters but I suggest that you download it yourself and check the specific Monster model that you own.

  20. Thanks. It’s a 2014 1200S GT I’ve got - I will download the spec sheet and check.
