Is this 'normal wear', or should I be worried?

  1. Just serviced the 996 and this was on the sump plug and in the screen filter. Does this come under normal wear or are my rockers screwed?

  2. I had to replace a few rockers on my 748 and it was much worse than that. Worth a check though.

  3. If it's stuck to the magnet, it's not chrome from the rockers...

  4. haha, in my worry I didn't even think about that!
that takes some pressure off my shoulders, it all runs nice and has been serviced properly for it's life so I hope it's ok.

how much are 1198 engines these days?

  5. yes far more likely a big end bearing shell haha - doh

  6. don't worry, it's not that either or if it was producing shrapnel like that from big ends you would hear it above exhaust accompanied by no oil pressure. What mileage has bike done? hopefully it's gear-mesh related.

  7. was kiddin lol

  8. It's on 25K miles. Been well used which was one of the reasons I liked this bike. Serviced yearly, belts every 2 years and had 2 rockers replaced a few years ago. With some more reading it seems big ends would be a brass colour so this seems to be normal gear wear. Oil pressure seems fine, and the light went out quick enough with oil change.

I'm going with it being fine, whether that's blind faith or good sense we will find out. I'll have it at a Ducati specialist for the belt service next year so if it lasts that long they will let me know.

  9. You're evil

  10. more likely chips of gears ???

  11. Trust me if it was your big ends you would certainly know about it (I am in that dark place right now:mad:). 90% sure it is the usual chippings off the gearbox, like has been said try them with a magnet.

  12. What's stuck to the magnet is the false neutrals out of the gearbox.

  13. well considering what pete says -
    that sounds like great news.....
now that the false neutrals have all gone onto the magnet ......

you should be left with a lovely slick positive gear change - doh :)

  14. Having just done an oil change on my 996, remember you need to torque the oil filter up to something ridiculous rather than the normal hand tighten most oil filters need.
