Hello all, My 750SS is currently running without fault or leak or even the hint of a problem (that's jinxed it!!), so my fettling urge has turned to cosmetics. I saw a Powerbronze twin lamp conversion on Ebay for next to nothing, and liked the way it looked so I snapped it up. Does anyone have any experience of how these fit? There's a lovely alloy casting housing the lamps, but this seems to be held to the subframe with a very Sid's arrangement of bent steel strip. I don't suppose anyone can help with a photo or two?
That's the annoying thing. The tricky bit - the fairing - is well finished (in the wrong colour red, but I always planned to paint it!) and fits pretty nicely, and the mounting plate for the lamps is really nice! I will just have to work out a better way to mount it!
My experience with a Powerbronze twin headlight fairing is best described As Above - Dire. Unless the design has changed, ensure you mask the back of the twin lamps, with similar effect to the rubber mask around the original square lamp, otherwise you will have more light coming back at you than going forward, and don't expect to be able to go more than 50 or 60mph with the paltry amount of light they do put out in thr forward direction. There's a reason it was cheap. I sold mine very quickly for not much as I didn't want any comebacks about how crap it was.
I must have got lucky with the fibreglass, because that's really not bad. Proper prep and a few coats of paint and lacquer and it'll be fine. Doesn't fit badly either. The lights do need some work, but if they are worse than the standard oblong glowworm, I think I may not bother!
To improve on the standard glowworm I tried a 100/80 H4 bulb - it just melted the plastic connector on the back of the bulb, leaving me with just the parking light for about 10 miles until I got to a Mate's house. I followed cars and just rode very slow until another one came by and tagged onto it until it turned off etc. with more recent technology now available I reckon you should be able to put some LED auxilliary lights on to improve the old glowworm. Ah, Sev beat me to it while I was putting the dustbin out!
I picked one of these up at Spa classic endurance a few years ago, haven't got round to fitting it yet (slacker!) everything supplied in one box, wiring etc. with a handy H4 connector too, price has gone up a bit (what hasn't?) but stll cheap enough to just beat the VAT man / HMRC.
