Hi all, I’m Interested in a 2007 GT1000 and I’m aware of the plastic tank issues. The seller has owned the bike from new and insists the tank is aluminium and was from new. I believe that at some point in the production run of the GT1000, Ducati did make aluminium tanks but I’m not clear if these went into production or were only retrofitted as warranty replacements. I can’t think of a suitable physical test to check if a tank’s plastic or aluminium. Are there any serial numbers or markings anywhere on the tank which identifies it as either a) early “problem” plastic tank b) subsequent improved plastic tank or c) aluminium tank? Thanks everyone. Best regards, Nigel
I honestly can’t understand this. The two materials are so entirely different, as is the consequential method of construction, that there must be half a dozen easy ways to spot the difference from a cursory glance, and a dozen more specific ways.
I initially thought the same but usually most tanks are manufactured for a very smooth finish. Perhaps underneath difficult to see without removing it.
I realise that the seams will be out of sight when fitted, but you want to buy and the vendor has assured you it’s aluminium he merely has to prove this to you.
Is it moulded (plastic) or welded (alu) at any seams? Is the filler cap screwed into plastic or metal? Is it white plastic or grey aluminium looking inside the tank Dues it flex easily when pushed on the side (plastic) or is it quite resistant (alu)? Are the retaining fixtures screwed on (plastic) or part of the tank? When you knock it with your knuckle, does it thud (plastic) or ring slightly (alu)
