Multi 1200s 2013 After trying to set the front preload a few times just realised that the adjuster somehow unwinds itself after a few rides. You can imagine my frustration that every time I thought I managed to put in the right preload then after a few rides it was wrong again Just hope one has an idea had to fix it or has a spare cap from an old fork and willing to sell it to me. Many thanks
Can't see how that adjuster on the right leg could unwind itself, but obviously something is happening, that adjuster just rests on top of the spring, with a washer/shim in between them, even the spring rotating somehow wouldn't move the adjuster.
@GTmorgan - I am surprised as well. I cannot figure it out either but unless I am loosing the plot I think is unwinding itself. The first time I noticed it went back to 0.5 turns from 4 and I put it down me forgetting. But the second time I was sure I had it to 3.5 turns and felt good but after a few rides it didn't feel so good so I thought to unload 1 turn and to my surprise I could only turn it half a turn. Searching on the Internet I found this video, true the adjuster is not like ours but I think the working principles are the same. See video So, what I have done now is to put in 3.5 turns preload and marked it. If does move, then, for sure it takes about 3-4 rides, around 400-500 miles. If does, is it then repairable or I am looking to an expensive new cap. Now I am looking for the roughest road with a couple of potholes to test it.
Unfortunately the cap isn't available on it's own, not from Ducati anyway, I found one on eBay a few years back along with complete internals for £20, they come up occasionally.
Took the bike out today for a short 50 miles ride and it moved 1mm anticlockwise. Will go out again for a longer ride and see if it moves more as 1mm could mean that it just settled. I looked on ebay as well but there's nothing. I had a look at Bike-Parts-Ducati and they got the number 34921361B listed as "Plug, RH" @ £128.16 plus VAT. I wonder if the cap can be dismantled?
Oh yes, could have sworn they weren't available when I looked a few years back, not too bad a price I suppose.
Definitely the preload adjuster is unwinding. After another 50 miles ride it moved almost 8mm. Now looking for a used/ broken fork or go and order a new cap adjuster. Anyone having an old unwanted fork just let me know...
