Hello all, it's been a while since I've posted on here but I have been looking at the touring tips and appreciate the info people have put up about Ireland. I'm in a slight quandary (1st world problem); having just ridden to the MotoGP at Assen the Monster 1200s was great on the long sweeping roads but more of a handful in towns and requires slipping the clutch in traffic. I have the option of using this with Givi panniers or a first generation Triumph Street Triple 675R which can purr along in low revs in traffic but would be less ideal on the long route across to the ferry. In Ireland we plan a leisurely ride taking in the scenery and stopping off in small towns and villages so the speeds will be low, it will be all about the journey. ] So my question is, particularly to people who may have both bikes or something similar, which would you choose and why? Thanks in advance
Thanks, I am veering towards that, but haven't yet tried it with panniers. I am vacillating between the two and change my mind every day! Though I have to decide by Friday night at the latest...
As long as you’re avoiding city centres eg Dublin (avoid like the plaque, your bike WILL get stolen), Cork, Limerick, Galway*, you’ll be fine on the monster, very little traffic here compared to the UK and outside of the Pale, very very little policing of speed limits. *I’d avoid Galway at all costs, it’s just one big traffic jam all day long nowadays, the trouble is the ‘greens’ won’t let a new ring road be built. ps, ever thought of Kriega bags strapped onto the pillion seat? makes filtering easier for the rare times you need to.
I've got the same triumph and it's a great bike, though I'd change the gearing if your sat on a motorway.
Thanks for the comments and tips re Galway and Dublin. The choice of bike has been made for me; looking to fit a USB socket I lifted the tank and checked the connection for the stator and regulator/rectifier I had fitted last year while I was there... On the positive side (no pun intended!) I found this at home and not stranded at the side of a mountain pass. Much as I love the engine and handling of this bike, the whole charging system is a recurring problem on them. Monster it is then.
It seems entirely the luck of the draw. It is the longest thread on the street triple.co.uk forum. This one was just too late for the recall to have it fitted by Triumph. I'm hoping I can fix this by hardwiring this connection and the stator isn't starting to fry again.
