Have a 1999 996 fitted with the standard Showa forks. I need to acquire another set for rebuild. Anyone confirm what other bikes these forks were used on in the same specification? I'm guessing the 748s and 916s will match but what about others .... ie. Monster etc Any help much appreciated.
Monsters of that era were mostly non adjustable. Overall shorter as well. Perhaps some of the SS models had the same forks. I'd look on the parts catalogue and compare part numbers from the various models. Same number, same part.
I would stick with 748- 996 forks. 996 were 53/53 mm top yoke/ bottom yoke while all SS, monsters and ST of the time were 50/54 IIRC.
Current forks in the bike are 100% and don't need replacing. I'm looking at replacing them with a set of "same specification" items rebuilt to impersonate the Ohlins fork of the SPS. And yes, I know it's a bit sad but I can't afford some real Ohlins for the bike! https://firefoxracing.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/ohlins-replica-forks.gif
I get your point Sev but, sadly, all I'm chasing is the aesthetics of the Ohlins forks. The bike doesn't need a performance upgrade as it's road use only - albeit spirited at times - I've an RSV4 for track days. Having looked at the 3rd party cost for gold nitriding and anodizing plus the general fork rebuild cost I end up well beyond the Firefox price. The other consideration is that most of the gold nitride forks I've seen available used seem to have a very non-uniform coloration of gold - no doubt wear - fresh forks would be a lot more consistent and visually appealing.
Firefox did a set of Suzuki Rgv250 forks for me that I had on my 350lc/rgv special and I just put an Ohlins sticker on the bottom, did a very nice job to
to replicate the ohlins feet you can buy billet ones from tk21 parts. these screw onto the showas and look the same as the fg8750
