Ok strange electrical issue with my 998. Never had any issues and today it wouldn’t start. Turned the ignition on the fuel pump primed then all light went out and nothing. Left it came back turned on the ignition and dash lights come on but so does the right hand fan. Press the starter and there is a buzzing sound and the fan stops. Is this a short I have no idea how to diagnose electrical problems like this. The only recent thing that happened is when my mechanic changed the belts he noticed the voltage regulator connector was burnt out a common problem. I believe he just removed it but bike worked fine when I picked it up. Any assistance you can offer is appreciated. I was trying to upload a video I took to illustrate this but couldn’t get it to upload
Battery is new and good. I turned on the ignition this morning and nothing. No lights power anything.
How do you know the battery is good? The recent reg/rec problem may well have resulted in the battery not being charged perhaps? Low Voltage is knows to cause all sorts of weird things. I would always start simple. What's the battery voltage? Are the leads tight and the contacts clean? Are the earth leads and points clean. I'd definitely want to have a look at the yellow wires coming from the stator. As you had the connector melt, there is a good chance the wires themselves are corroded all the way to the stator.
Checked battery with the ignition off and on, around 12.5 volts. No obvious visible issues with the yellow wire, cant see anything lose. As I mentioned when I turn on the ignition there is nothing, no power, no lights on the dash nothing :-(
Main latching relay? It's the yellow one on the right hand side. Nothing works without that. They're easy enough to find. It's just a 5 pin relay but it has 2 pins 87. Most of the 5 pins have one pin 87 and one 87a.
No yellow relay on the 998. The main fuse is right therein the centre. Have you checked that? Check the earth wire going to the ecu and the earth wire on the 19 pin connector next to the airbox.
Thanks Bettes I believe the 30amp fuse is good but I will check again. Didn’t know there was a ground from the ecu so I will look for that also not sure about the pin connector near the airbox will have to figure out where that is cheers
So there was a cable attached to the ECU with a blue tab, shown in between 10 and 11. It was a little loose but I tightened and didn't make a difference. Is that a ground and where does it connect on the other end anyone know? Sorry electrical is not for forte.
Yes that’s the ground. Goes straight to the battery. Not 100% sure now but you should have either 3 or 4 main earth cables from the battery terminal. The 19 pin connector is on the R/H side closer to the headlight. Hope this helps…
Hope your ecu is ok. They sometimes had issues with the internal earth. @chrisw is a master at trouble shooting these problems.
Well looks like I was over thinking it. I disconnected the negative terminals to the battery, inspected them then attached and tightened back down. Ignition on, bingo, started first click. Terminal wasn't loose or dirty I just changed the seating order. Weird but good now.
i was gonna post to check the terminals, had the same, took me days, and then tightened them up, mine (honda) was turning over but not firing, looked at fuses, tilt sensor, everything unbelievable that something so simple could be missed
