V4 Using The Clutch When Quick Shift Is Enabled

  1. Hi:) new to Ducati, please be gentle with me! Traded my BMW S1000XR for V4 Rally, had it a couple of weeks and so far I'm loving it! One of the duller things I have done is gone through the manual:)

    I read you should not manually change gear if the DQS is enabled? Is this really a thing? The DQS does a good job, but sometimes at lower speeds/gears I can do a smoother job, plus I get a nicer blip on the throttle...

    Is there a "real" or "technical" reason not to change gear yourself occasionally? Thanks, Peter
     
  2. I don't manually blip or upshift with the QS. But I do use the clutch, and I always use the clutch 1 > 2 because it feels clunky. There is a sensor on the clutch lever anyhow that knows when it's pressed and and when it is, then you won't hear the auto-blipper or cut from the QS.

    I use the QS a lot, leaving manual changes for 1st to 2nd and low speed stuff. These tend to be slower changes and the bike seems to realise that you are not using the QS and responds accordingly.

  4. Be aware that you can get a delayed ignition cut from QS if your clutching your shifts in lower gears /engine speeds it’s a bit of a lurch when it happens. I found my V4 QS to be quite clunky in lower gears and my new DDX has far smoother changes & hasn’t stuttered if I clutch it ( being an old fart it’s ingrained)

  5. I always use the clutch for 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st. The QS never seems very machine sympathetic changing gear through neutral. Not sure about the Rally but on the Pikes Peak, I'm pretty sure you can disable the down shift and just have the up shift. Andy

  6. And my tuono I used to get some lovely exhaust noises when partially using the clutch on downchanges. Not so much on the streetfighter :(
    But I always use the clutch around town and at slower revs. Works fine both ways above second and 4k revs

  7. For me, anyhting lower than 5-6k rpm needs the clutch which is quite often. As you all know, if you go above that all the way through the box , you are well past legals ! Asked dealer to check it and as expected, they said the clunkyness is normal below 5krpms

    My 2021 s100xr was much smoother , but thats about the only thing it was better at doing than the Multi !!

  8. Half the time I forget I’ve got a quickshifter and still use the clutch like I’ve always done on my other bikes!

    I did find if you are applying some brake when using the quick shift to change down it’s a lot smoother than just banging it down.

  9. +1 for using a bit of brake
    I use rear brake a bit and makes downshifts almost seamless especially with wifey on the back. The good thing with the PP rear brake is you can only apply it with gentle pressure as it's rubbish !

  10. Same sentiment as a lot in here, I'll clutch if I feel it will help and never had a problem. However in sport mode I have all assists including QS disabled. I find short shifting (rev matching to shift, not sure if short shifting is the right term...) way more fun and engaging and more often than not, smoother than a QS

  12. I leave it on , easy riding a bit of both , Qs and and delicate clutch , now if hunting the QS is a plus as you can just full throttle up and down , the the bike likes that....and appreciates the fuel ....Gretta might disagree
     
  13. I use the clutch most of the time on mine even though qs is enabled.
    Not a big fan of quick shifters.
    I'm probably in the minority though.
     
  14. Like others I use the QS only for gears 3-6 and only when accelerating briskly.
    In my world one of the joys of riding is the perfecting clutch and throttle to match up and downshifts seamlessly. Wonderful and beautiful no drama noise.
