2. Those DP single seats ruin the look of the bike.

3. Ok, at the two bike friendly garages near me you do.

4. Can't complain at that' listed and sold in under six hours! Guess the 999 is in demand.

5. It will also need a full belt service if the belts are over 2 years old regardless of mileage. That will cost £500+ depending on where you got it done. I'd make a silly offer and if he doesnt accept it, walk away.

6. Or £125 if you diy

7. Interesting. Seems a bit 'muddled' to say the least.

8. I have seen some proper bargain 999's in the last 12 months

best one i missed was a 4500mile 05 that went for 3450 in feb

prob not going to be too many more that cheap

9. Agree with that Phil. Love my S and way more capable than me. I fitted the 749r tank; gets you another couple of litres.

I believe 999 to be the most successful Ducati raced in terms of percentage wins from starts at WSB...

11. It also still holds several BSB track records :upyeah:

I love my 999S too. I picked it up last April or May, it was a spur of the moment thing. Ebay purchase, 2004, 16k with a huge amount of bills, few go faster bits, DP clutch, chain adjusters, sprocket cover. Cost be £4350. I reckoned it was never going to lose much at that price. Belts, they needed to be done. they still do, they've been on 4 years now. I've just done the belts on my Superlight after 5 years and can honestly say have removed the old one I wish i hadn't bothered. I've bent them back and forth and no cracks, i was tempted to see how many 1000kgs they'd take on the rig at work. .. .
Anyway, 999. Belts are daft money, £140 a pair, genuine ones for the SL at £44/pair. Gates HTD belts for the 851 are £44/pair also.
Reliability has been good, other than one stonking wet day got some water in the front plug hole and even a month later would run fine unless you gave it WOT [wide open throttle] at mid revs and it would miss. Sure enough it was water in the plug/coil cap.
Runs Conti Sport Attacks, they suit it. Termi's are nice, not obtrusive.
I've done 240 miles on it this week, does 115 to 120 until the light comes on, averages about 43/45mpg. Comfy, slim, light. You could compare it to a RSVR, they're the same age and kind of cost. different bike to ride, the RSVR is much bigger, heavier. I like both really.
Needs a major service now, so i'll do everything, other than the belts, which i'll do in the spring before I start to use it again.
Value, i don't think they'll get any cheaper than they are now. . . .
oh and.. . . .

Basically, the 999S doesn't fit with my other stuff. Everythign else I'd say is collectable. The Superlight, the 851, the Edwards is of 461 worldwide. The 999S I feel will fall into that category soon, i'm sure it's heading that way. I good R would be a sensible purchase. But it's also nice road bike. The other bike that's got under my skin recently, is a ZXR750H1. Again, they're getting collectable. Bought in June and did a tidy up. It's 31k and 4 owners. stock other than front brake lines

15. In the hands of Carlos, Troy, Noriyuki, Michel, Ruben and Lorenzo (Lanzi) the 1098/1198R racked up 46 World Superbike victories, a pretty impressive 42% of all the races it competed in. Virtually every other race or one win per round.

But.......

The Ducati 999R took 65 victories from 120 starts for an (unbeatable?) 54% win proportion.

To be fair the rules and the level of competition were very different during much of the 999R’s domination - they had access to Michelin radials in 2003 and the rules that restricted Japanese 1000s.

But the results are the results and the 999′s record is likely to stand (forever?).

No danger from the Panigale beating it?

16. very interesting that onthe racing history mileypau
For me I buy bikes based on heart and head. The heart:- the looks and partly some of the bikes i have are the ones I wanted from a kid but could never afford. the head buys things that are a little bit special and a little rare. I really have little interest in bike racing, I couldn't tell you who's even racing in WSB, BSB etc [indeed does BSB still exist?]. I used to rally, again, i don't know who's the running at national or international level. I like watching the TT, that's it.
I'm never going to ride at an ability to use a 999 hard on the road or track [or my NC30 for that matter!], so it's of little consequence. The 999 does it for me on it's looks, mechanical pedigree. It was like the Ford Sierra, for those old enough, when it came out, it was mostly disliked, it was a little ahead of it's time. A few years in and it fitted well. 999 was the same, a bit futuristic when it came out, now it doesn't look 10 yrs old and it's kind of unique.

17. Oh go on then

18. I think they were cheapest (relatively) when the 1098 was around 1 yr old. I think they are getting a little bit more pricey for really clean ones now as people start to get used to the design. I have a mate thinking about spending 6-7k on a 749R... Crazy...

19. Bought mine 18 months ago and prices are holding very firm.

There is a steady trickle of mint bikes being broken for bits. I cannot assume there were that many sold given the right slating the press (and bike owning public) gave them. Anyone know the website that lists all the number registered by type/year. Might be interesting to see just how many Rs and Ss are out there.....
