Hi, Took my 94 900SS out for a spin this afternoon and after about 20 mins the battery light came on. It was on steadily at about 3000 rpm but as the revs dropped it would flicker a little. I was riding with sidelights on so I turned them off, and the battery light went out. I turned the lights back on and the light stayed off. I carried on riding for another 10 mins and the light stayed off. After a break, I set off for home, and the same thing happened again: after about 20 mins, the light came on, turned the sidelights off and on, and it went out and stayed out for the rest of the ride (another 20 mins). Any ideas, or is this just a case of a 90s Ducati doing its thing?
@NotoriousREV What does your owner manual say about this « battery light »? May be a battery charging issue? I would start by checking the alternator charges the battery correctly through the voltage regulator.
When I had a 95 900ss it did similar things before the regulator finally failed. Suggest you get hold of a multimeter and measure the battery voltage with the bike off. You should see in the region of 12.5v to 12.7v with a good battery. When you switch on this will drop a little. Fire the bike up and hold it at around 2,500rpm for a couple of minutes. With a good regulator this should settle to around 14.2v. If less than about 13.8v the regulator is definitely on the way out.
Yes, most definitely. Your regulator/rectifier is toast and will boil a lead chemistry battery dry. Andy
