Featured Sxv550 Supermoto Build/refresh

  1. Not hot on the heels of my 400/4 build and no where near as in depth - as ive opened a couple of other threads re acquiring an SXV550 (getting a van and the v5 update) - imo the ultimate supermoto....still is and nothing else touches if for sheer mentalness....

    Its mine now....work has started in earnest...ive not ridden it yet - i brought it back with no wheels on and no forks...seemed pointless just to build it up and then take it apart again..! so without further a-do....to the pics...

    Wheels torn down for coating....powder for the rims and cerakote for the hubs...

    Collected the cerakoted stuff today...started off like this...

    Those are my HPK's in there from the z1000 - the shitty nickel plating came off so got those stripped and blacked out as well...

    The rims will be a couple of weeks to come back but on the weekend i can start to re-assemble the yokes, refit the handlebars and maybe put the forks back on (but it is easier to drag round the garage with out them on tbh...

    Apparently mine never came with clocks (i think cos some were configured out of the box for racing) but ive sourced a set along with some additional black plastics including the rare sidepanels (that go under the seat) with the numberboard space when being used for racing. Just trying to coax them out of the guy at the moment but he never seems to reply to messages!

    The big ticket item is a full arrow ti system which i can get new for a grand but id rather have a second hand one as i want it also coated black..

    Anyway - thats it for the moment!

  2. As ive only got the one key, just received an oem key today - no chip inside so dropped it up the key cutters....6 quid and im good!

  3. I hankered after one when I was in my ‘Motard’ phase. Local guy seems to be somewhat of an SXV guru. Apparently the 2007 engines had crankcase sealant issues, 2008 were better? As you say , ultimate supermoto.

Yeah - ironically thats the thing that tipped me over to actually buying one...jump back 10 years my mate bought the enduro version...went out over salisbury plains with some of his enduro mates...so the story goes they set off at one side of a big field they all opened up - my mate shot out in front on his rxv....at the other end, it blew up...catastrophic engine failure...

    Fast forward to today (and in this case mine) the engine building procedure has been refined over the years along with updated gaskets and other parts. Mine, is right now a brand new engine thats got 80 miles run in time on it....the lad that i bought it off (and who built it) said "just change the oil every 500 or so and itll go for ages" - i totally trust him as he had 3 other engines on the bench he was building.

    Theres 3 versions of the engine...mines the second version which [so im told] is the most reliable...the newer version makes more power but has thinner crankcase walls, so im more than happy with that...

    On the whole really happy with it....its even easier to strip apart than my z1000 and thats simple.

  6. Sounds like the best situation you could possibly start from. I would love to have an SXV, if they are as wild as everything seems to suggest I think I'd be happy to take the risk on one.

Well - ironically the lad i got mine from had just gotten hold of another one....it needed a full engine refresh which he had just done....alpina wheels - silmoto full system also...i dont think hes even put it up for sale....it went straight in for racing - previous owner did some hill climbing on it....looked beautiful....i think he was in the middle of applying for a v5 for it as, as i say it was used for racing from the get go....think ive got a pic of it...

Not a productive weekend....took more time than i thought to clean the zed (my daily driver) - now we're getting to the wintry weather im striding close to weekly cleaning, (scrubbing the chain with parafin, then chain wax, general clean) then every few weeks or so, exhaust and calipers off also....any way - tried to beat a new lower bearing on the headstock which didnt go very well, (caught the dust seal) so off to bike shop tonight to get another one and...what i should have done years ago...ordered a bearing press.

  12. Question for anyone....the thread on the stem is a bit tired - im sure theres some sort of tool that you can use to tidy/recut it? or am i imagining something...?

  13. Ok never seen one of those before.....looks a bit magic beans....how will it restore a possibly dodgy thread? - i was thinking tap and die type affair where is clamps round and the you have a couple of arms coming off of it to turn it?

  14. Thread files are a very handy tool, but will only partly restore the damaged (external) thread, if you have a steady hand you can do the same job with a hacksaw, not sure about Cromwell tools though, a bit cheap and nasty

No movement this week from a building point of view but, after 3 weeks of mostly one way conversations ive managed to secure all the paneling i need, a set of clocks and, half of the full arrow system (the tail section). Wheel rims should be back next week so next sunday is going to be a busy one...assuming i can get it back on its wheels week after next there'll be some more stuff coming off for cerakoting....

  17. Rims are ready, so collecting those tomorrow if i can coax the other half into doing it for me - if i get a barrage of abuse ill be going out at lunch time.... :)
