916 Expansion Bottle Woes

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Johnnyboy0680, Oct 26, 2024.

  1. Good afternoon everyone,
I just wondered if folk on here would recommend replacing the stock 916 expansion tank with a carbon fibre expansion tank or something similar. My tank has a slight split in it (not on the seam but near the top of the tank) but I’ve heard the plastic tanks are fragile.
If recommended, where is the best place to get one or if anyone on here has one they would be willing to part with I’d be happy to discuss. I’ve looked online at the EVR but Germany or similar seems to be the only place to get one from,

  2. In ten years ownership with mine i've only ever replaced one plasic stock expansion tank, so that's not too bad in my humble opinion.

  3. Thanks for your reply, I’ve only owned the bike for a few months and the last owner had only replaced the bottle a few months before. It does look brand new as well.
I just wondered if anyone had upgraded their expansion tank and if so what for.
I’ve seen both a carbon and an aluminium tank online (both quite pricey) but if they are better than stock I’d be tempted.
I might try an OEM part first and see how it goes if you think this is just a bit of bad luck.

  4. Still on the original after almost 30 years. Fingers crossed it will outlast me.

  5. i haven't looked recently, but someone was making batches in aluminium sheet fairly recently at a reasonable price. It is weird how owners experiences contrast, i only got through one in 5 similar bikes but i know someone who got through 3 within 2 years, and always go at the seam. Makes you think later mouldings were not as well made possibly.

  6. You have to be very lucky to still be on your original. I fitted an alloy like what Chris posted just for peace of mind. Some people have been through 4 or 5.

  7. Isn’t that usually more of a 996 problem ?

I still have the original water expension tank on my 916 SP (12.000km), same on my biposto (48.000km) before that.

All the 996s I have come across had gone through multiple of these, though, with coolant leaks at the seam that sprayed white drops inside the windscreen…

  8. Mine split too, but apparently they are widely available i.e. OE parts... Just disposable I guess

  9. Never had an issue with my 748 or 916 in the 20 years I had them.

  10. No failures on my 97 Biposto in 7 years 97-2004.
Recently had one fail on my 98 SPS, the second one in nearly 20 years.
No problem getting one, Nelly had one in stock.

  11. Ducati ought to offer a discount on that part out of sheer embarrassment, particularly if you bring in your old one.

  12. My original lasted for maybe 10 years, the replacement less than a year (Ducati dealer said 'no warranty'). The next one failed on the first rideout as the bike pissed itself at the petrol station after just 12 miles, in this case the (different) dealer replaced it FOC.

Each failure was at the same place on the welded seam at the back.

I got an alloy tank from the USA, been fine since.

  13. I just love the final sentence in the small print, “This is a functional part and mostly hidden anyway, so it does not play a role as a cosmetic piece”. No shit Sherlock :joy: Andy

  14. i guess it's like art Andy, we all see things differently. I quite like it!

  15. If “welding” aluminium had been on the curriculum back in my day, my apprentice master would have gone red in the face and spitting feathers :joy: Andy
