Hey guys, my bike was working fine 2 days ago and i drove it to my friends house for a party, i left the bike in his garden and in the morning i was just about to ride back home, but the bike would not start. all it does is just turn over until it stops. and then i try again and so on, until the battery went dead. anyway, i pushed the bike up the road and tried to bump start, and still no luck so i left it for a few hours.... so 6 hours later, i got my jump wires and connected it to my dads car to try again, and still no luck, just turns over but wont fire up.. does anyone know what the problem could be? i mean the bike was working fine the day before, something must have happened over night :frown: any help from you guys would be appreciated thanks!
If you've got Iridium plugs fitted then change them to stock Consider replacing the injector/fuel pump/coil relay (found below the starter relay, behind the heat shield at the back of the battery box). They can be got for £1.90 off eBay You may be suffering from the earthing problem that has caused starting issues for a number of forum members You can test this by running your earth jump cable from the -ve battery to a good earth on the engine. Fuel? Check youve got some. Silly thing I know but i bet theres a few on here that have kicked themselves over this. I can count myself on this as a blown reserve bulb caught me out once. Check fuses, has some wag pulled a fuse? Or have you blown one? Check plugs. Has some wag pulled the plugs but I'd remove a plug and check it sparks okay. Thats where I'd start. Check ive fuel and a spark.
Fuel pump relay, when you switch the bike on you should hear the fuel pump prime up for a second or so.
Parked up fine, tempreture drops over nite, battery goes flat, you continue pressed the starter, turns a little, fuel keeps on being circulated any chance you've just flooded the cylinders? Smell the exhaust can? Strong smell of fuel, pull out clean the plugs, or try staring with a wide open throttle? No error codes or lights on dash?
The relay controls the Fuel Pump, Coils and Injectors. If it is not working properly then it can cause all sorts of problems. You will probably find it furred up with verdi gris as it will not have been changed since 2004. It is a cheap part to change anyway, so worth doing.
can only agree with what ChrisW said, i had a similar problem and through trial and error the bike was fixed after 3 months with the help of ChrisW (much appreciated and havent forgotten the help i recieved from him). I changed the relay anyway and put the finger of a rubber glove over it with a cable tie and tape to make it waterproof (wouldnt start), I did the earth lead mod (wouldnt start), changed my coil sticks back to the old ones as i'd changed them for the later more waterproof ones (wouldnt start), sent the ECU to chris had it reflashed (wouldnt start), borrowed a virgin ECU off chris put that in (still wouldnt start), then he asked if i had iridium plugs in which i did, put standard plugs in and it fired up right away, changed my own ECU back in and still fired up and has every time since. fuel pump relay: 4 Pin 'Normally Open' contact MICRO Relay - 20A | eBay buy a couple as always good to have a few spare. spark plugs: Genuine NGK Spark Plug Ducati 749 2005 | eBay
as the bike turns over there is no smell of petrol what so ever, but the fuel pump does prime on start up, or at least i think it is.. there is a thin noise that lasts about 3-4 seconds, thats the fuel pump right? one question for you guys, where is the relay located? i cant seem to find it anywhere. cheers.
If you look at the back of the battery box you will see a silver heat shield. Behind this are amongst other things the ECU, starter relay and the coil/fuel pump/injector relay. To get at it, it is a battery out and unbolt the battery box from the frame (3 x allen bolts). The heat shield is held on by 4 awkward Philips type screws. The relay is held by a rubber strap below the starter relay. One mod I recommend is to move the relay from it's current position and locate it at the top left of the battery box. There is even a square rubber holder that you can push it into. Doing this makes any future repairs quick and easy.
If your mates are anything like the nobs I call mates,then the last place to leave your bike is within tampering distance.The worst time to leave it is during a party.I would be checking for sabotage.Then go and shaft them with a frosty mop!
Probably got vomit, piss or Irn Bru in the tank! Your mates haven't hit the kill switch? Have you got one of those shit alarms/immob that are affected by radio masts?
mates didnt do anything, as the bike was right outside the window and it was always within my line of sight, i did let a few girls sit on it but other than that nothing else happened. i dont have any immobs on it other than the stock immob that flashes red on the dash.
Yes, I was going to say kill switch, as how many people have at one time tried everything to start a bike and then found some wag had left the kill switch on "off"? I once had a short in a Honda kill switch which prevented starting. Have you jiggled it a bit?
