1200 1200s Touring Etv Relay (s) Location

  1. Hi folks.

The parts diagram shows 4 of these. Looks like 2 each side. I've found the ones on the left side but can't for the life of me see the one on the right. Local dealer told me that they replace them all on a Desmo service. Does anyone know how to get to the right side ones?

Shows 2 sets of 2 relays but I think that only one is an ETV relay. Can anyone confirm this?

  3. Thanks very much Paul. That's a massive help. It looks like there is only one ETV relay. My local dealer obviously didn't know, or couldn't be arsed to check so I bought relays in total. Replaced the ETV and injector relay when I only really needed to replace the ETV. Thanks again. :)

  4. It’s the relay for the “fly by wire” system Edward.

  6. Hi Paul. Can I pick your brains? My MS is still running really rough after changing the ETV relay. I've checked the coils with a multimeter and they are within spec. I've taken the exhaust valve out and put a cheat relay in. Changed the very front HT lead as it was showing no resistance. Once I did that, it seemed to run great, then i left it running to go out and as soon as I touched the throttle, it stalled and wouldn't start without playing with the throttle, but, even then, it ran really rough and stalled as soon as I touched the throttle! Its got new MAP sensors as well. I just took it out and the same again. I thought the new ETV relay had fixed it but obviously not. When pulling off, it is really hesitant or stalls! What else do you think it could be?

  7. Have you looked at fuelling potentially being the problem?

  8. I have but where do I check?

  9. I honestly don't know, I guess my first check would be checking all fuel lines to see if any are cracked/damaged causing a leak.

  10. We experienced a similar sounding fault with a 2011 Diavel which shares the same semi fly by wire throttle body as the 2012 Multistrada. Turned out be one of the butterfly stepper motors was not synchronising, technical term is “fubarred” :D Whilst it looked like the stepper motor could be changed, it wasn’t sold as a separate part. Resolved the issue with a complete new throttle body. I’m pretty sure I’ve still got the old throttle body which will have one good stepper motor if it is your issue. Andy

  11. It’s very difficult to tell remotely like this. There are numerous sensors around the engine which feed signals back to the ECU and from which the ECU determines the fuelling and throttle response. If one of them is faulty it can throw everything else out.

Really the best thing is to find someone who has a diagnostic computer, perhaps an independent mechanic, Texa is about the best which is available to the trade and the public, and connect the bike to it. This will show up any issues/errors stored within the ECU but more importantly it will display a variety of parameters as the engine is running and as you open the throttle. From the information it displays you, or the mechanic, should be able to close in on the issue.

Without such information and data you’re really only guessing what’s up and swapping parts in/out in a trial & error basis, which gets expensive.

It really is worth paying for 30-60 mins time to connect the bike. Alternatively try and use some of the free diagnostic software eg JPDiag, or find someone nearby who has something like OBDStar or Topscan Moto. Whereabouts in the UK are you?

  12. Thanks Paul. I’m in Ashby De La Zouch which is in Leicestershire but on the border of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire.

  13. Road & Race Performance at Meriden aren’t too far from you and I’m sure they have suitable diagnostics equipment to determine exactly what’s going on.

For a Ducati specialist though you’ll do no better than @nelly of Cornerspeed in Sutton in Ashfield.

  14. Thanks for the offer Paul. I'm not sure if it's the same as the 2013 but if it is, I'll give you a shout.

  15. Thanks again Paul. I think you're right, worth the expense to get it checked first.

  16. Hi Paul.. Got it to Cornerspeed last week. They have checked it and found that the front cylinder is far too rich, and the rear isn't right either but not so bad. They've swapped MAP sensors but no change as the front cylinder was giving twice the reading of the rear cylinder. Changed plugs as they were toast because of the rich mixture. Next step was to check valves but they are fine. Air filter is OK. Scratching heads now!

  17. You’re in good hands with @nelly he’ll get to the cause of the over fuelling. Do keep us posted when you eventually know what is the issue and the fix.

  18. Well, as you said Paul, @nelly sorted it out for me. A bit of a challenge for him as he hadn't seen anything like it before but it turned out to be throttle body adjuster screws that weren't synchronised for some reason. He checked valves and just about everything else but that, when adjusted, fixed it. We have no idea why they had come broken the paint marks as I haven't been near them but, on riding it the 40 or so miles home, it was like I had just picked it up as it has never been so good. When I first got the bike, I thought it odd that i had to give it plenty of throttle when pulling off or it would stall - I just thought that was maybe a twin ism or something. Clearly not as it pulls away smoothly and from tick over if I want. I do feel a lot lighter in the wallet department but I think Neal has been more than fair with pricing and I was completely happy to hand over the dosh! Thanks for your help in suggesting where to go as I would have never found the fault.
