998 Belt Tensioning Tool

  1. which tool did you use to test the frequency Henk?

  2. I tried all the he recommended apps/software with no real success...only Spectroid worked for me. I think as it has a "history graph" you can really read the hertz easily.

  3. So when you look at the proper factory tool in the image it has a standoff that allows precise positioning, and that allows the harmonic to be read correctly to their requirement.

The minute you go for some app based thing thing then you're throwing yourself open to all sorts of variables.

"recommended" - the only thing Ducati et al will recommend will be their own tool or an industry standard. So a Mathesis or Texa in this case. Anything else is just man on the internet talking.

Also, think about this - does anyone calibrate their phone apps?
do you have for example a tuning fork that you can measure the app against the known good frequency? The answer will probably always be no, and therefore you don't know how accurately the phone mic picks up the frequency to start with. At least with a base calibration you might find that the phone reads x hz over or under and can compensate your result accordingly.

The price of proper kit has come down now as well, Laser do a sonic tester within the same price range as a set of belts if you look around.

IF you're changing belts a lot then fine trust your thumb and forefinger, but there will always be some bloke out there who's fingers aren't as calibrated sympathetically as yours, and therin lies the problem.

  4. I did. back to back on my 1198 belts Texa and the gates app on my phone......... very very similar reading...... it was just easier to be consistent with the Texa..

  5. More testament to the mic in your phone in reality.
That said, the original gates app was gold.
Have they updated (ir ripped up and put the old one back) the piece of dog log that came after it?

  6. I used to use the Gates Carbon drive app until it would no longer work on my phone, now I use 5 and 6mm allen keys. I did find another app which seems ok, Audio Frequency Counter by Keuwlsoft, has options to set the level and noise thresholds which is handy.

  7. Don't know anymore, was when i did the first belt change myself and the reading was really all over the place.
With the facom tool i just increase the tension until the piston off the tool come at a line and done.
    You just can't go wrong.

    Henk!!!
