You are thinking of the Supermarine S6B ,A racing floatplane designed by Mitchell who also designed the Spitfire.
I wasn’t to be honest I was convinced that the Spitfire was also built as a floatplane. I bow to your superior knowledge.
This is really interesting video. Found it sometime ago on my Youtube wonderings. Why was the Mustang better than the BF109 ? And yes, it really was faster !
Because it had a Rolls Royce engine, not watched if that is the real reason. There is a beautiful model in a display box at RAF Cosford, the attention to detail is sublime.
