Firstly if anyone has a second hand one gathering dust on a shelf, please sell it to me! Secondly, as the above is about as likely my hair growing back, I'd like to know if there is a shock from another bike (maybe Monster or Supersport, or non Ducati) which is a bit shorter than my Hyper one which I can use? Anyone got any thoughts or experience ? Ta
Rich at Louigi has lowered the standard shock as much as it can be but I still want to go a bit lower so I need a replacement lower shock, but I can't afford a new custom made Wilbers or Nitron. What I would like to try to understand is there a shock out there for another model of bike which is say 30mm shorter in dimensions that I can fit? Or isn't it as simple as that?
That’s quite a significant amount of lowering. If you find something I’m fairly sure you’ll need to do something similar with the front end too or else your steering geometry will be massively out and the bike won’t handle as intended.
Unfortunately not as simple as that as the damping/ rebound/ spring rates etc will be set up for whatever bike it’s on. It’s possible you might get lucky but you are just as likely to end up with something awful and at worst, dangerous. It may be possible to swap out springs etc but by the time you have had it set up right, it will, probably just as cheap to get one made to spec from the start.
No, it's not as.simple as that. How much do you want to lower the bike? When you've got that number, you'll need to understand the suspension geometry to work out how long the shock needs to be. You'll also have to work out how much travel the shock has, so your rear wheel remains well clear of everything above it when at full shock compression. I suppose we're all assuming you've started with the lower seat option already. Also, you may be aware that 821/939 Hypers (I think both the 'strada & 'motard) for the Asian market are available as lower bikes - not just.lower seat. It would be worth scraping the internet for an Asian-market shock if you can find out the part number from one of the Ducati parts list websites. Try this: https://www.bike-parts-ducati.com
