Underslung Rear Caliper Bracket

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Nasher, Dec 29, 2024.

  1. Is there such a thing as a standard Ducati underslung rear Caliper Bracket that has a 17mm spindle AND a mount for a speed sensor?

The standard above arm one on my 1000SS/SL Mongrel:

An Older SS or Monster one does not have the Speed sensor mount:

I thought perhaps I could convert an 959 Panigale one by machining a spacer for the spindle hole and removing the stop, but the slot is too close to the spindle and the speed sensor hole is too small.
I might see if I can find a really cheap one to have a play with.

  2. Simon, depending on what you're trying to do, you're better off modifying a 17mm spindle item. They're the same disc as the panigale, so you're only really worried about getting the flat face for the speedo drive and the hole, the rest is spacers to give you the right offset from the ferrous target.

just make a bracket to take the sensor and bolt it onto an existing underslung hanger you have.

That underslung SS / monster one is ideal as the brake hose guide tab can be used to mount the sensor bracket.

  3. Thanks Sev
Just been pondering the same thing and am off out to the garage with a side of a teabag carton to make some cardboard templates to mount the sensor off possibly the Caliper bolts.

  4. don't go trying to modify a xx9 hanger either as the disc mounting pitch is different to the SS / 8xx / 959 disc.

133mm on the older and panigale, 125mm on the xx9

Depending on whether it's a OEM or aftermarket speedo you're using, if aftermarket you could consider off the sprocket mounting bolts, as you'll be needing to calibrate the speedo anyway to the number of target points and revolutions

  5. Thanks Sev.

The wanted add for a 749/999 underslung hanger is a different project, for my 999.
I can't help it, I just like underslung Calipers, even though when simply braced to the swingarm they are just for the looks.:D

For the 1000SS mentioned here I could go the whole hog and fit the floating SL Underslung Caliper bracket I have, with a Torque arm to the engine, but still have the issue of the Speed Sensor.

I also have a Monster/SS 900 underslung bracket like in the 2nd image of my original post which I need to find and mock it up to help work out what's possible sensor bracket wise.

  6. Doubt there's anything available off the shelf, so to speak as all that era used a mechanical speedo.

I have a digital dash on my Monster and I fitted the speedo pickup onto the swingarm using the (redundant) bolt hole for the caliper bracket slider pin to hold it as I have the floating caliper that doesn't use this.

It's ideally positioned so that my sensor picks up off the disc mounting bolts, also holds a guide bracket for the brake line.

I also have a digital dash on my 916 and fitted the bracket for the pickup to the rear caliper mounting bolts to, again read from the disc bolts.

  7. Thanks Dd.

I think the bracket I have has the little upstand to mount the Hose clip like on this one, so I might be able to use that:

  8. wavy discs.

Report yourself to the nearest mirror and have a stern reprimanding word with yourself.

Use that hole. the tab is thick so it's not going anywhere.

if there's demand for an underslung 749/999 bracket I could draw one up and get them machined up.

  9. Indeed, reprimand accepted but, if it's any defence?... only on the rear.

But actually, that disc on the 916 does seem to work better than the original. As you will know 916 have notoriously weak rear brakes but it's fairly good (if kept air-free). Not sure why, maybe because it's not stainless, in a sort of 'cast' way? On the downside it does surface rust if left wet.

As for mounting the sensor on that bracket, looks like it would be a good idea. :upyeah:

  10. Ignoring Bleed Nipple and Banjo Bolt position, does anyone know if most Ducati/Brembo Rear Calipers are interchangeable with regard to Pad/Mounting bolt relationship?

As I’m looking at putting underslung rear calipers on both my 1000SS/SL Mongrel and my 999, it would be nice to use a Rear Caliper on both that has the Banjo Bolt in the front position when upside-down, to keep the hose run quite short.
If I use something like a Panigale Caliper, will the pads line up with the disc?
    I think they should:
