748 748 Sps Price To Mate

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by fred11, Jan 14, 2025.

  1. Hi All,

I joined this forum just before I bought my bike, and I think I've been as active on the bike as in the forum..

The other day my good friend said he wanted to buy the bike, we agreed a deal there and then and now we just need to figure out how much money should change hands.. Could anyone give me a ballpark figure? The guy is like a brother, so he should get a good deal, without me leaving to much on the table if you know what I mean.

1998 SPS with roughly 16k miles or so.
Needs full recommission as its not been used for about 8 years or.
    Wheels not original colour.
All original and SPS bits, except the cover, is with the bike.

He'll do all the work himself.

Would be very grateful for advice.

    Thanks,
    Fred

  2. My view is if you were to attempt to sell it you may advertise it at £5k expecting to get £4.5. To a mate who will do it up himself I think it’s a £4K bike. You don’t mention if it had the desmo service at 15000? If not and he can do this himself happy days. If not and he can’t then knock another £750 off.
Probably not what you want to hear but it’s a very slow market. Buyers are gold dust. Be interesting to hear what others think.

  3. The only 1 on eBay, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/26708642...M+MIeA3C7HVSzQWv3BHmi4avQ=|tkp:Bk9SR-q3xNyMZQ, is currently advertised at £8999, from a (non Ducati) dealer and is a Japanese import. 748SPS’s have been strong this year, prime examples being advertised at 748R prices. Ordinary 748’s are changing hands at over £6k. IMO, don't sell to family or close friends, it’s not worth the grief if anything goes wrong (or it becomes too much of a challenge). Andy

  4. Really? Asking price is very different to what is paid. And many simply don’t sell due to seller aspirations.

  5. Yeah I understand about selling to family and friends. Not an issue in this case, he actually was the one that inspected the bike and bought it for me in the first place, and it lived with him for years.

He said 5k, now I'm wondering if it's too high? There is a new belt with the bike and other filters and service items that I recall was £350 from Ducati.

Would you use a NOS belt or is that spent as its been in a box in my garage for wire a while now?

  6. Ambitious price at that mileage, wheels painted and should have f/floating C/iron discs as well.

  7. It's very much a case of condition. I find with any bike over a certain age condition is everything. If you're happy with the 5 he's offering then it's pretty much sorted.

  8. Given Andy spent thousands on his later 748 and it sat for ages…plus a £1000 bill if a dealer does the recom probably 5k about right imo

  9. if it's not been used for 8 years, partly depends on storage conditions, no close-up engine pictures etc to go on, then 5K sounds good to me.

  10. Great that settles it. Thanks guys!

  12. It’s probably around £6-7k IMO, standard clean bikes seem to be up for £6k ish and as others have said, unlikely to sell at that. Really clean 748r’s are nearer £9-10k but again, not sure how many are selling

  13. I paid 5k for mine and I think I got a great buy!

  14. At 5k you won’t make any money if flipping but will have a few quid to make it a great keeper.
