Hi All, what are the pros and cons, if any, in fitting a sponge type air filter over the intake trumpets under the fuel tank of my 916?, i have just fitted some one piece carbon air ducts and the only option for filtration is the undertank type as described above.
No, sponge over inlet filters are not your only option. Give me 2 minutes, I think it’s called a BMC filter but need to check. Andy
Here you go, https://www.bmc-air-filter-shop.com/030.040/Motorcycle-Filter-Ducati.htm. By no means cheap but a much better option and very easy to maintain (added post, post) IMO. Andy
Don't do it. BMC for sure. Before (blue) and after power curves with an over the bell mouth filter. I think it does something with the resonance on the airbox
Depends if you're after max power ( why would you on a classic?) or best filtration. I have a Pipercross over the trumpet filter. Had it for years. Bike was chipped with that on and made good power. I had my engine apart after 29 years because a bearing started to fail. The rest of the engine was in super condition so the filter definitely works.
Had a sponge filter on my SP3 for years with no issues and no discernible impact good or bad. Personally filters that use oil to trap dust seem pointless and are labour intensive as well as a bit pricey. Anecdotally they seem more trouble than they are worth.
Where is the preferred place to buy these from, looking on their German Web page they have no postage option to UK, there are some on ebay from Italy ,but I'm a bit suspect at buying something for that money from there.
You could try these people, https://ukroadandrace.co.uk/collect...fVj1sXTbtczzeoeUbY58624CmJ5RaVi5e-bHZhGf2HfZL or Demon Tweeks. Andy
I've had mine many years however, last year I noticed they were falling apart - the silicone? surrounds were crumbling so I needed some replacements. I got them from 'Motoracing2000', on ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/motoracing2000 which, despite coming from Italy were the best deal I could find at that time.
Here; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126877768785 I've not searched but this seems a 'good' price for them, they aren't cheap anywhere and I had no problem with this seller. Plus, there is '10% off' (on my ebay anyway) and he has 'make offer', you might get lucky...
If you’re having to buy from the EU I highly recommend Carpimoto in Italy. https://www.carpimoto.com/en-IE/Engine-Parts/18329_FM324-19-BMC-Air-Filter-for-Ducati.htm If they say they’ve got stock they have and it arrives very promptly. They should sell to you in the Uk on an ex vat basis. Just be aware you’ll have to pay UK vat on arrival and if the total cost of the goods plus carriage are >£135/€150 you’ll have to pay customs duty at 10% plus what ever admin fee the courier charges for collecting the duty & vat. Is there really no reseller of BMC products in the UK?
There's no duty to be paid, just VAT and the couriers customs fee unless part or all of the goods were manufactured outside of the EU and declared as such. I know the "free trade deal" doesn't feel very free but there are zero tariffs on goods manufactured and imported from the EU.
That’s useful to know. I know if stuff bought from the UK into the EU is declared as manufactured in the UK its duty free, so I guess, yes, it would be reciprocal. At least BMC filters are actually made in Italy and production hasn’t been outsourced to China or India.
