Dirty deed complete, just delivered today. Really looking forward to getting some miles in on this. Fun after first service and getting some decent tyres fitted.
A friend test rode one the end of last year and said it was a hooligan machine. He's seriously considering one. He's just sold his versys 1000 and also has another bike to sell to help fund a new purchase
Very nice. They look more manageable than previous versions of the GS. What tyres are you going to have fitted ? - out of interest.
Be a while before I get out with all the road salt, but they do feel very small compared to previous versions. The weight is reduced, but moving it around in the garage it feels lighter than the claimed reduction…if that makes sense? In GS (not GSA) form it now feels like one of the smallest ADV style bikes. Gone for no panniers, no racks, no radar, manual screen, all to keep weight down. Tbh, the electric screen thing I dont get, this one has a lever, up/down takes a second. Quicker than going in to the menu and pressing a button. Gone for cast wheels too. Lighter than the spoked and much easier to clean, the spoked black rims on my 1250 were a nightmare.
Enjoy I have done 2 days training at BMW off-road (Walters Areana, near Glynneath, Wales) on the GS1300 Trophy(blue and white) what a weapon. I agree with your "keep it simple" decision, these look much better without all the luggage mounts, miles of useless "scaffolding" pipes around the fairings, and all the unnecessary bling.
Funnily enough, just been looking at some eye candy in Vertu Ducati today, showroom through the door to their BMW showroom. Some very pretty bikes. Not very practical…but pretty. Mostly. Though a big question mark with some of them.. Depends if you want to pose or ride. IF I did track days though, the Panigale v4s looked the business. Complete with easy snap winglets. No sign of the new streetfighter, not sure when it hits the showroom floors. Old versions still for sale.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Only ever ridden one GS. I absolutely hated it. It was enormous (no idea what it was other than it was a boxer.
I get it. My first ride on an 1150 adventure was a wtf moment. Didnt even want to ride it, more somebody wanted to ride my FZ1s so did a half hour swap on a euro trip. Stalled the gsa, got away second attempt. Then wondered why my hands were getting hot Lots of shuddering, crunchy gear changes etc…this one had been converted to a 17” front and all uprated suspension and other ‘stuff’. It actually cornered like it was on rails though. Which was intriguing. Horrible thing it was, but interesting in equal measure Hard to explain the purchase of my first 1200lc My second 1200 was a 2017. It was actually a very good motorcycle, went well, handled great. Gearbox as ever, not the best. Then another (help!) a 1250. Just more performance, slightly better gearbox, much more flexibility to hold revs or run the revs lower. Same issues. Weight, size, cylinders that when you look down one is further forward than the other. V twins you dont really notice. Something clever has happened with the 1300, shrunk it beyond the figures claimed, the engine is now the same at both sides too, looks way better. Add in +10bhp and more torque. But, the shaft drive is also more efficient, so less power is lost. Real world at the back wheel is therefore more than 10bhp… Maybe I should get a job at BMW
Culprit number 1 Culprit number 2 with main offender Number 3 3 culprit number 4 ^^^ Any cures? Im not sure….tried drinking, tried not drinking, keep coming back to them.
Tbh, blame the actual purchases of GS motorcycles on Ducati. Took my Multi 1200 in for a 15k service and came out with an S1r. Yep. Makes no sense does it? Not a GS by any stretch, but defo a BMW. then the Mrs decided she would go on the back again. Hmm. Why not buy a GS then. You see, logic at work….
I had a HP Megamoto for a couple of years, and it really was one of the best balanced bikes I have ever ridden. At the time it's only weakness was the motor, which was highlighted when I test rode an MTS1200. Regret letting it go now of course. The new GS certainly looks smaller and lighter; have been thinking perhaps time for a change...
The guy in sales (that I also bought the 2017 from) I know, had one of these. He says the new one is like a tuned version but just way better in every respect. As stated though, I stay clear of the massive GSA versions…just dont understand why anyone would want that much bulk. Typically I run soft luggage too these days. Vario panniers are heavy enough for a work out, that is before adding luggage!
The GS off road school is excellent My previous 2 bikes were a 1250 GSA and 1200 GSA. They really are fantastic bikes, if you can see past the looks.
