Speeding

  1. It only feels like yesterday when I posted about speeding, online course and all that.
Yesterday there was a familiar looking envelope, from the fixed penalty unit, bollocks I thought, there was a flash coming out of London, you can never tell, was it me, could have been the other side of the motorway, who knows?
I opened it up to discover that it was only a reciept for the speeding offence, phew.
Big pile of post this morning, another familiar envelope, yep, you guessed correctly, 83 mph on the motorway, just under the 79 to 86 band which means I just scrape into the take the course and no points bracket.
I have no points in fifty years of riding but I've picked up two speeding offences in a month.
Too many cameras for my liking, they will strip us of any enjoyment, where's the fun in that?

  2. Bummer. It’s the reason I don’t go down through England to get to Europe anymore straight from Ireland to France now.

  3. I feel your pain. I read an article recently basically saying that 5 years from now the countryside will be filled with puce faced gammons (like me) thrashing about in their sports cars…

The machines are taking over… o_O

Glad I was born in the 60’s.

  4. What I find quite amusing is this. People who speed a little bit need educating with a course about the dangers and effects of going to fast. People who speed more don't need that. A fine and 3 points will teach them.

  5. I'm more aware of my speed in towns and villages, kids, animals and old people, on a cold Sunday night on a motorway does it really matter if I do 70 or 90?

  7. I did a speed awareness course once, just to avoid the points. It is all bollocks from start to finish!

We were shown a film about some terrible accident on the M4 once. It was foggy and everyone was just driving too close - I've never spotted a camera that picks that up! So, it was nothing to do with speeding, but fog and driving too close. They proudly told us that the lead driver bullshitted by saying a bird flew low across the front of the car, so he braked, causing everyone to pile in! Apparently, Dr Bird Expert told the court that birds never fly in fog, so the lead driver was a lying toe rag and deserved the noose!

I can tell you that this "expert" knew nothing! Birds do fly in fog. I suppose if they are spooked, or something. Because I now look out for it, and lots to crows and pigeons sit in the tall trees around my house, the birds definitely. definitely do fooking fly in fog! I've seen it with my own eyes!

So, not only don't trust the Police, but don't trust the eggspurts that they wheel out!

  8. If it is the same policing area only 2 months later you are unlikely to be offered another course. I am sure there is a 2 or 3 year wait before they would offer one again instead of points.

  9. Was the 83mph on a average speed stretch? Seems harsh and i cant ever recall seeing a camera go off at those kind of speeds (i wouldnt have a license anymore if i did).
    Where was it?

  10. 83 recorded is probably about 86/87 indicated on speedo.

  11. You can have the choice of points and fine or a speed awareness course at the cost of £89 on line
Someone I know got caught at 36 in a 30
Took the course and found it interesting and said they learnt a few things

  12. That's a good point, but it's possible that a naughty-step course could be offered because the alleged offence was on a motorway (assuming the previous offence wasn't). Not 100% sure on this.

  13. You're only offered a course if you are below a certain speed. For example: Speed limit is 70 miles per hour. 79 to 86 you get offered the course. 87 to 99 you don't get offered the course and go straight to a fine and points. 100+ you get banned.

  14. +30mph over any speed limit, not just 70mph on the motorway, and you are in for a court attendance and a Ban. it used to be 3 months.
They can't ban you in your absence I believe so you get summoned.

Don't ask how I know that;)

  15. You'll definately learn a few things, applying them is the tricky bit

  16. Definitely not always a ban over 100mph (see below). I'll add what I said earlier that you will generally only be offered the course if you haven't already completed one in the last 2 or 3 years (forget which).

Mine was 107mph (tracked by an unmarked single occupant BMW). Court appearance, massive fine (around £1,200 ish), 6 points, however no ban. No, I didn't plead I needed my licence or that loss of it would impact anyone else. I was honest, remorseful, and lucky.

  17. Jeeeeesus!

  18. I deserved mine.

78 in a 40 along Winston Churchill Avenue in Portsmouth, which just happens to go past The Police station and Crown Court. For effect you understand.
