Neutral Switch

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Vader, Mar 8, 2025 at 7:07 PM.

  1. Hi all, anyone know where the neutral switch is? I can’t see it in my manual. My neutral light has decided it wants to stay on today?

  2. back of the crankcase, in a nutshell. Hopefully it's just a lead with bared wire shorting out somewhere, or sometimes damp will cause this but usually temporary. They are a pain to remove because of the permanent flying lead, but picture shows one method. It can be two-lead or a single lead type, i always preferred the latter for simplicity.

  3. That’s great, thanks

  4. Found it,
Looks a pig to remove. Don’t see anything obviously wrong so I’ll have to remove it.

  5. is it two lead or one lead? - you can find the connector and disconnect just to confirm that it's the switch that is completing the circuit permanently.

  6. Yes it a 2 wire switch. I’ll disconnect it in the morning

  7. Just had the opposite happen to be on the way to work last night, also going to remove the rubber cover and have a look at what's going on in the morning. Hope it's just come loose a bit and not water damaged.

Fingers crossed easy fix for you too :upyeah:

  8. Pulled out the rubber boot, gave the connector a crimp and pushed it back in. Did not work.

The neutral switch looks like fun trying to remove. Think I'm gonna need to remove the front header to get to it. I'm going to run through everything I've done recently and check fuses and such just to make sure that's all OK. But I'm positive it's the neutral switch that's causing the neutral light to not come on

  9. when you say you are positive - all you have to do is earth that wire on to the crankcase with the ignition on to check that the light comes on. :upyeah: As you don't have a flying lead attached on yours, removal isn't that bad, and on most frames a deep socket will do it, or a deep socket with an additional external hex, like a spark plug socket.

  10. Light on when it touches the spring, light off when I remove it :upyeah:

  11. definitely switch playing up then, it's probably failed electrically but sometimes it's "mechanical" because the plunger isn't travelling far enough to activate the switch but only easily fixed if a washer can be removed for example. You can test it when you remove it, but a lot easier to just replace.

  12. Thank you, I will replace. It's not expensive from what I've seen. £35 max

  13. Well this worked fairly easy and it's not too much hassle to remove everything out the way. Ready and waiting for new one.

Sorry for hijacking the thread @Vader I've only just come to my senses after my night shift

  14. Removed mine too, it doesn’t open fully, I put a multi meter across the 2 wires, 25 ohms, press the switch 0.3 ohms. It should be open circuit when not pressed. I’ll have to order a new one.
