Discovered the bluetooth DMS module that the dealer ordered (to replace the one I had carried over from my 2018 V4S and which didn't work on the new bike), has in fact been superceded. Contacted Ducati who verified the module is now in it's third incarnation, no doubt to address compatibility issues with software changes over the years. Dealership agreed to order me the latest one and I've to return the one they originally ordered. In itself no big deal, that is unless you have already fitted it. Got a text today saying the module had arrived. Having removed V4 bodywork so often, it's was a matter of 15-20 mins to get the mirrors, inner ducts & nose fairing off, in order to gain access to the module to remove it. Dropped off the module at the dealer and picked up the new one before heading home. A little over 25 mins later, I had it fitted and the bodywork/mirrors buttoned up. The module will have to be activated by the dealer at a later date, which also ties the VIN to the module. Hopefully that will sort the issue out once and for all.
Managed to activate the bluetooth function and tie my VIN to the DMS module with my OBDStar console, so I will get the dealer to check for any module software updates at some later point but for now it's working as advertised. Painter has been in contact to say the seat will be ready next week. All well and good the bike should be complete next weekend, ready for the first ride in Spring.
what is the advantage of the DMS module? I asked my dealer and they hadn't fitted one so couldn't confirm functionality
It's not quite as sophisticated as the system on the Multistrada but in essence the DMS module (Ducati Multimedia System), allows you to pair your bluetooth intercom/headset and mobile phone with the bike, so you can accept/reject incoming phone calls and recall and dial up to 7 received numbers and/or play and control music from say for example Spotify, directly from your LH handlebar switch. Pause, Skip, Next Track etc. In addition you can pair it to a separate SatNav or run a background app on your phone (such as Google Maps) to hear turn by turn directions (or if the feature is built in - or available as an accessory on some newer bikes), you can hear the instructions through your headset, as well as see guidance on the screen. The new Panigale V4 for example or the Multistrada both offer this feature. You can also connect the Ducati Link app, which will record your bike's data as you ride, items such as lean angle, speed, distance travelled, routes taken, next service due notifications and more. You can even set the ride modes from the app. Some might say it's frivolous on a sports bike, but for me it's very handy, as I spend quite a lot of time on standby for work and need to be contactable over certain periods, so being able to receive calls, means I can still go for a ride, on the days when I am. Many of the newer headsets such as the Sena or Cardo offerings, also have an FM radio, which is useful if you want to get traffic updates on a longer journey. It is not everyone's cup of tea but it works for me.
That's pretty much what I use it for but I do like the option to listen to the radio and/or music on longer journeys. The new "Wave" app from Sena is a game changer as it means you can communicate with another rider over a limiitless distance which is great if you want meet up somewhere that is not local to you both, yet still have a conversation and co-ordinate with each other whilst still riding and not having to stop to call one another, to check on your respective whereabouts. Not sure any other system offers that functionality. You even get a map showing where each party is located within the app in real time, much like Live360.
I wonder how the bluetooth will work for you and the Wave app. In my settup, I can't use the phone app directly, as the phone is not linked to the helpmet, but rather phone linked to the bike, and headset linked to the bike. When I got my bike, at first I had the phone-helmet link up, but could not get bike mixed into it. But after I deleted the pairing, and went to bike instead, it worked, and I could use the bike controls.
There a few anomolies with the DMS setup. Notably that the Ducati Link app will not work or worse crash, if you simultaneously try to stream music or make/receive a call through to your headset via your phone through the DMS module on the bike. It is one or the other. This is an issue that Ducati were made aware of almost 4 years ago but that still has not been resolved. A lot of these restrictions are due to the 2.0 BT Chipset that resides inside the module and is woefully outdated. They've pretty much left the app for dead in terms of development (it is over 10 years since it's launch), having now thrown all their efforts into the Ducati Connect app, which by all accounts, has a much better GUI. The SENA Wave app uses VOIP (the same principle that is used when making a WhatsApp call), so as long as you are connected to your headset via your phone, or through the DMS (though you don't need to be for WAVE to work), and providing the other party is currently connected and logged in to the WAVE app, you can both talk to each other irrespective of distance. Be aware that on the road this will be consuming your cellular data, outside of a current WiFi connection to your phone. How you might ask is this any different to just calling each other. The main difference is that you can see the other party's geographical location, displayed in the app and other riders you invite who are logged in, can also be invited into the conversation. Open/Group Mesh on the SENA for example, limits you to about 1.5-2km max, so Wave is a game changer in this respect. In addition the other party does not necessarily need to be using a SENA device. If for any reason you lose internet connectivity (in the case of SENA) it automatically selects OPEN mesh, until such a time as you regain coverage and your WAVE connection is restored. Hope this info is of use.
I have been asked numerous times over the years with my builds, if I have ever tallied up what I have fitted to the bike, so spanning the last few months I have kept a list of each part. This list does not included purchase costs, as these are apt to fluctuate and a total figure can easily be reached with some time and research, if anyone is curious to know. This is more of a reference for the work carried out. The total spend is what it is and the build makes no sense financially, but that is not why I did it. If anyone wants any information on specific parts listed below, then please send me a PM. As mentioned in a previous post, the bike should be complete towards the end of the week, assuming the seat cowl paintwork is completed on time. Naturally pictures and perhaps a video will follow. For now here's the list....
