1200 DVT Help Identify Sudden Oil Leak

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by PineWhisper, Mar 23, 2025.

  1. I went on a ride today and when stopped noticed some oil on my left rear tyre and some floating on a rain puddle beneath the bike. Whilst I'm waiting for AA to collect, can anyone help identify what this missing bolt is? Can only assume something is meant to be there and isn't anymore..

    Any other ideas/advice welcome!

  2. Leaking clutch slave? Is the clutch fluid level low?

Don’t think there’s anything missing, probably a mount to be used when builing the engine???

  3. Just been and checked in mine, I have the same bolt “missing”. Nothing supposed to be there as per Twinlover. Looking at the cable running underneath your clutch slave, I reckon he’s right with that too

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  4. Clutch push Rod o rings …

  5. Or, worst case scenario, the output shaft seal, behind the front sprocket, has gone. But check clutch slave cylinder first.

  6. Thanks all, super helpful. Will take a proper look tonight and if it is the slave, use it as an opportunity to get an Oberon one.

  7. This is where I'd place my money based on the pics provided. Hopefully it's the clutch slave as others have said.

  8. Struggling to keep day light at the moment to properly look into this. Cleaned the bike up yesterday to get a better look at it all, clutch fluid is on the low mark and when pulling the clutch after washing, I did hear a little squeak like air was coming out down by the slave but it stopped after a couple of pulls.

I've ordered the Oberon slave and a couple of o rings for the clutch push rod. Will take it apart and remove the front sprocket cover to see what that's like when I come to fit the parts as it needs a clean anyway. Hard to tell for 100% exactly where it's coming from but it does seem like one of the 3 things everyone suggested.

@Bumpkin / @freshage If it is the output shaft seal, can you help provide the part number? Struggling to find which part it is online

  9. It's item #61 on this parts diagram. Original part number 93040221A.

If this is the source of the leak you'll need to check the output shaft bearing as a precaution. It is, of course, possible for the seal to fail on it's own. I don't want to put the frighteners on you but failure of the bearing, I'm pretty sure, would require some serious work entailing engine out and splitting of the cases. Primary cause of failure being an overtight chain.

  11. Looks like it was a broken o-ring on the push rod, fingers crossed that's it all fixed. Thanks for the help.

  12. Ever since I've changed the clutch slave to the Oberon, the clutch doesn't fully disengage. I'm not sure if it's always been like this or if it's because of the new slave.

I've bled the clutch from the bottom and top, leaned the bike over to get any air out. Can't see any air and clutch feels firm/consistent. I've reseated the Oberon too just in case. I've measured the rod and it's 30mm so shouldn't need the extension piece from Oberon.

When I have the engine off, in first and clutch in, it's extremely hard to move the rear wheel. When the engines on and I put into first, the rear wheel starts spinning then stops. If I let the clutch out slightly then pull it in, the rear wheel keeps spinning and you can't stop it unless you press the rear brake. Changing gears feels clunky too.

Any ideas on what it could be?

  13. Did you bleed the clutch master cylinder as well

  14. Yeah bled both the master and the slave multiple times

  15. Try adjusting the plunger on the clutch lever.

  16. Tried that too. Currently on the max setting

  17. Mine is the same (2012 1200MTS) with Oberon. Works fine on the road but same as yours when not running. No clunk when engaging first or anything so assume it’s all fine. My 750ss is also the same! (But totally different clutch set up).

  18. @TBay This is what mines like, is yours similar? https://imgur.com/a/YdKN3JT

    0:00 - 0:05 = 1st gear, clutch released
    0:06 - 0:15 = 1st gear, clutch pulled
    0:16 - 0:25 = neutral
    0:26 - 0:29 = 1st gear, clutch pulled again

  19. Yup very similar. Threw me when I first noticed it as used to clutches that fully disengage to the point you can spin the wheel with just a bit more drag than normal. No issues at all on the road and finds neutral easily (unlike the 750ss which is a notch to find neutral on).
