Car Brakes - Advice Sought

  1. Hi folks - we bough a new (to us) car a couple of weeks ago from a reputable local dealer. 2017 BMW 225XE.

It’s my wife’s car so I don’t/won’t drive it often, but when did I last week I noticed the brakes sounded a bit ‘graunchy’. Forgot about it til a few days ago then noticed that there are score lines on the discs and a lip on the outer edge. There also doesn’t seem to be (from what I can see) a lot of meat on the pads.

I’ll admit I didn’t pick it up on test drive, which BTW had a tick against the brake discs and pads in the PDI, but we’ve had the car 2 weeks tomorrow and it’s got a 3 month warranty (we know how they try to wriggle out of things though) - I do think I have recourse to ask the dealer to fix the issue.

    Any thoughts?

    TIA
    BJB

  2. Sounds like the lip of the disc is catching the pad back plate, this tell me they are both worn under minimum. They would not wear this quick in 2 weeks tho so I would go back. Sounds like they tried to get away with it if it was your wife sorted it. If it is not that then there is a warranty issue anyway as something is making the noise.

  3. could be the result of a sticky calliper, take the car back for a documented technical check to confirm is ok otherwise cost may arise after your warranty runs out

  4. Warranties don’t cover fair wear and tear. However, if the brake wear is that bad, the pre sale workshop inspection should have picked it up and advised the pads (and discs maybe) should be replaced. If you were to asked me, very poor and unsafe if not dangerous which is not the sign of a “reputable” dealer. Andy

  6. Is she a secret track dayer?

  7. Bring it back and tell them to fit new discs and pads

  8. I’m on it thanks chaps. Goes into workshop next week.

    Thank you all!

  9. Does the "graunch" happen on every application of the brakes, or when you first start & then wears off? If the latter then it might be a set of hard pads that need a bit of heat in them.

If the lip is catching the pad backplate then there will be a corresponding scoreline on the pad backplate. If there is any possibility it is this I'd be taking a wheel off & taking photos, and if the scoreline is there I'd be calling the dealer to collect it.

If the disc isn't catching the pad and both are within manufacturer's tolerances then they are not obliged to do anything imo.

  10. The fella from sales who handed the car over 2 weeks ago is a nice chap and has been very helpful. He said it’s got a sensor that should notify pad wear, but that hasn't happened.

As I say it’s in the workshop so we’ll see what happens. I don’t even mind paying for new pads if that what it needs (they do seem low).

They are big dealer in a prominent spot with a good reputation. With online reviews these days I’d imagine that reputation is well-earned. Am sure they will come good.

  11. there is only one pad sensor per corner, front left and rear right normally. So in the unlikely event it’s a sticking caliper it won’t catch that. Lipped discs are very normal on BMW’s tbh, must just be the way they set up the pads etc. you will do well to warranty it, and my fear is they will put absolute junk discs on there.

I recently did Brembo discs and pads on my 220d m sport and it was pretty reasonable. Remember also BMW handbrake is a drum thing inside the rear hub (not the brake caliper) these can wear and squeal

  12. Thanks Phil.

    Good information.

  13. i will say this, i have brembo pads and if you turn doswn the stereo and listen it grinds, they are fine, discs are all ok, grinding noise it worse of car hasn't been driven for a few days

some times we men over think things

  14. It’s a daily driver so gets plenty of use but I know what you mean. My Triumph Scrambler makes all kinds of noises when I’m riding with plugs in my ears!

Maybe as a new (8 year old) car after 10 years of leasing brand new motors is making me a bit paranoid but hopefully the workshop checks will put me at ease. It’s more the fact it’s my wife’s car and she has the kids in it that’s has heightened my concern.

    Thanks for all the replies.
