1198 2010 1198 Idler Shaft Hole Issue (engine Case Side)

  1. Hi Everyone,
I am a new member here but have been lurking for about a year. I bought a used 1198 a little over a year ago, that ran but had issues starting. With the help of some older posts I was able to get the bike starting and running pretty good. I rode it a handful of times and then it started having an issue where it would die at a stop light but only after it warmed up. Then it was impossible to start again until it cooled down. (This left me stranded a few times) So back to the forum again, I found some older posts about the starter clutch and decided to replace it. While I was doing the starter clutch I decided to change out the starter too. Well when I removed the idler gear and the idler shaft, I noticed the hole for the shaft had been elongated/deformed and the bolt holding the idler shaft in place was bent. I read in one of the posts that you could potentially use Loctite retaining compound and this would resolve the issue. Has anyone done this? Is there any other way or better / stronger way to fix this issue? Other than replacing the engine case? Any advice would be appreciated!

Oh, I also decided to fit some Ohlins FG43's and Harris Racing Triple Clamps while I have the bike apart but this might be another thread, since neither of these parts were intended for this bike...I have it mostly sorted out, except for the brake caliper adapters. 2. The 1198 should have a pin that engages into the alternator cover, to support the end of the pin.

You can get the hole bored out and sleeved.

  3. Do you know if I would need to remove the engine to do this? I am thinking that a sleeve and the correct loctite might be a good solution. Any idea where i can find a sleeve or what metal i should use for this?

  4. Sorry, no idea

  5. I think I found a sleeve, should have it in a few days. The one item I cannot seem to find is how the pin fits into the hole on the cover side. I seem to be missing a piece and all of the parts diagrams that i have seen do not show this piece. Here are some pictures for reference.

  6. Can’t help you I’m afraid but I am intrigued by the engine number you have: XBLA006403.
Doesn’t appear to follow standard ZDM….type numbering.

  7. I did not realize this was not standard. I know it matches what I have on the pink and the reg though.

  8. Maybe you have different numbering over in CA.
