1200 DVT Stripping For Service

  1. Hi, long time no post from me but i have won a 1200 DVT on a 17 plate in a competition. The last service in the book is for 2021 and included the timing belts, bikes showing 14k miles. Intending to get a full desmo and belts done, however as i'm WFH i have the time to do the strip for service myself.

Is there a guide somewhere showing what needs to be removed for the desmo service on the DVT? Assumption would be side panels, tank, airbox and radiator + hoses?

  2. Not so much a guide, but yes, just removal all panels, tank, air box and you might shave an hour or two from the dealersteal prices.

  3. I’d remove all the body panels plus any crash bars obviously, but leave the rad and airbox. Whoever’s doing the service will want to run the engine if not road test the bike afterwards.

  4. If the belts and valves done and only on 14000 is there any need?

  5. Belts are 5 years/18,000 miles and valves at 18,000 miles. If you feel in any way dubious about the belts, filter and oil, I’d agree, change them but valve clearances is on mileage and you have another 4,000 miles before the check is required. Dealer price for the service and valve check is ITRO £1000 +, doing your own body work will save you maybe a couple of hours labour but as said, certainly my workshop test ride the bike after servicing which they couldn’t do if the panels have been stripped off. 6. Cheers all, the last documented service is @ 8k miles in 2021 and the belts were done, then the record runs dry, so feels like the right thing to do tbh. I can then run the bike for a year or so and makes it much easier to sell on.
