I have just finished restoring a 748 and took it for a spin. When I got back it was smelling of fuel. Lifted the tank and fuel was coming out of the fuel pump flange. This only happens when the bike is running. I have cleaned the fuel pressure regulator and now the bike won’t run. Could the pressure regulator be knackered and causing both issues? Tank doesn’t leak when bike not running. It’s a new tank BTW. Thanks in Advance.
I would suspect that the o ring for the pump assembly has either been nicked or displaced during installation of the pump.
Possibly, though leaking only whilst running, could also be from the push-in fittings and, worth checking the in-tank hoses too. Don't know much about the regulators, never had a problem with mine. Either way, pump out and replace all 'O' rings, the parts are cheap enough - though the large, pump 'O' ring can be found for way cheaper than Ducati...
External hose to pump connection is first place to check as these joints become pressurised as soon as you start up. Most likely nicked one of the small o-rings on the pipe/tank union.
Thinking more the actual fittings where they push onto the tank outlet and return, very small thin o-rings on there which are easily damaged.
