1000ds 2003, i first thought i was overfilling the tank, but even after 50km or so, I comeback home to find some gas on the floor from the left side breather tube on the tank. what could be causing this?,
The rubber pipes will probably be ok, obviously check them first, the problem will likely be oxidisation in the steel/alloy pipes within the tank, try blowing through them to see. They're quite tricky to unblock as the pipes don't run straight. Compressed air might work if not too badly blocked. The only way I could unblock the pipes on my old 03 DS was to use the inner of a bicycle brake cable attached to a drill and slowly bore out the crud, what comes out is a fine white dust, just keep going until you have a clear passage in the all the pipes.
which one are you guys talking about exactly? i already tried blowing air into the breather hole under that gas tank cap, it doesn't seem blocked, after blowing some air into it, I can hear fuel traveling to under the passenger seat into the Recovery reservoir/Tank breather valve and the i can see it sending fuel back into to filler hole, followed by air. is it working correctly? (I'm used to simple carburated bikes, no idea how the Recovery reservoir/Tank breather valve works)
Is air flowing through the pipe from the filler cap to the bottom of the tank, pipe number 4 on the top picture? That's the pipe which usually blocks as water gets in there from the filler cap recess and corrodes the inner pipe. If you remove/clamp the pipe from the recovery system, under the rear seat, and blow through pipe 4 at the bottom of the tank you'll soon find out if it's blocked.
I also remember something about the roll over valve, number 10 on top picture, they tend to fall apart inside, I think it's just a plastic clip which becomes dislodged. They come apart easily enough, I think, it's been a number of years, so not difficult to check.
If you've checked all the pipes are clear, don't forget that the pipes are linked so you'll need to block off, or clamp, the other pipes when checking each pipe independently, and the roll over valve is working correctly, I can't think of much else. There's another site, multistrada.net, which is the main source of info for the early Multi's, lots of guys still running them and have been for years, would be worth joining as, I think, 99% of the owners here own the later 1200+.
Is the leak constant, say, with a full tank, or only random? If it's constant then a breather pipe is perforated within the tank. If it's random then i wouldn't worry about it myself.
interesting thread. the filler overflow on mine is blocked and allows a bit of water in to the tank if i'm not careful. i've blown it out a few times but it never lasts. i was a bit worried about poking something down it. bike cable on a drill, yip, that will deffo work.
was going to add, but like you thought, nah.. leave it.. If the internal breather drain hose is perforated and it's the one from the fuel cap aperture that's mean to take away overflow when filling, then watch out for water ingress in the same aperture if bike left in the rain etc as it only adds to the problem. If it's perforated (disconnected even, on some systems) near the top, then leaking will only be on brimming of course.
