Another great thread Sam. Thank you for taking the time to write it all up. Trust you had a good flight back and are back home safe and sound!
Walk on the Wild Side. That track had been going around in my head for about three weeks solidly before I went. I couldn’t get it out of my head, great track although it’s more about New York, yet somehow it seemed appropriate. Flight was very good. BA seem to come in for a lot of stick nowadays but I like them. I’m back in the north end of Cambridgeshire now with the challenge of getting my body clock adjusted. It’s 4.30 am. Glad folks have enjoyed reading it. It’s a double whammy. 1.It’s great that people enjoy reading. 2.When I look back it reminds me of the trip instead of it being lost in my memory. I’d encourage more people to post about their bike trips. Even if it’s only pictures or the smallest comments, I always find it interesting and it makes me want to go places. I also posted up on a site called Polar Steps which means I can get the whole thing printed as a book which will be a great keepsake. I did get a GoPro so I’ll edit and post something when I get chance. Editing is such a long process. Wish I’d used the GoPro for the f22 jet. I’ll add a few more pictures to various stages and some more detail about the stages after Monument Valley and the last ride down to LA. I’ll try and amend those posts so it remains in sequence. I have to have it in sequence, probably doesn’t matter to you but it’s one of those obsessive things for me. In case anyone is interested in doing it. ( One guy I talked to has done it 7 times)! That’s not for me. Every year most people ride West to East USA. Also Daytona week is massive. Therefore EagleRider have hundreds of bikes that need to be returned and do a very well priced offer to ride the bikes back to L.A. Only a week after Daytona week though. It saves them trucking the bikes. Normally the weather is better, we were unlucky. If I did it again I would rent for a month which would make time to stop and take in more of The States. I booked the flights in Jan/February BA sale. Get this, the flight from L.A. To Heathrow was £160. Total flights something like £460/head. Also, weirdly flight time to Orlando is only about 30mins to 1hr quicker than L.A. The return flight is over near the polar cap. All we get fed about America is a view of violence from films and only the bad news etc. but you couldn’t wish to meet more pleasant, welcoming and polite people. I’ve wanted to do this trip for years and I’m really glad I’ve done it. I love a road trip but this was more than just riding. It was about seeing America and meeting American people. It was an experience!
I definitely enjoyed your musings whilst crossing the States, so thank you. The weather is frequently very cold at that time of year. Flagstaff Az is not that far north from your routing, and the ski resorts there -as well as Taos Nm- are operational for another few weeks every year. Where are you going next?
Devon tomorrow for my sister in laws wedding. They’ve only been together for 40 years. Then Spain on Easter Sunday…… Itchy feet!
2001: A Space Odyssey. HAL 9000 is named HAL because it’s an Acronym for ‘Heuristically programmed Algorithmic computer’. Arthur C Clarke said it was nothing to do with IBM but alphabetically 1 letter before each of the letters I, B & M are H, A & L. Too much of a coincidence I’d say. HAL the artificially intelligent computer claimed; “The 9000 series is the most reliable computer ever made. No 9000 computer has ever made a mistake or distorted information. We are all, by any practical definition of the words, foolproof and incapable of error”. Then it did make an error just like the Harley sat nav.
Brilliant analogy if not at least a fun one!! I remember a hundred years ago studying Clarke/Kubrick in film school. At that time I never could have imagined a Harley with satnav much less it being compared to HAL "I'm sorry, Sam1199, I'm afraid I can't do that” spoken by Harley9000
