The carby parts list gives part numbers for the right and left halves but the 900ie gives a part number for the pair only so can't compare numbers. I thought that they should be interchangeable since all internals are the same as are the barrels, but then I remembered that the ie engine uses a 3 phase alternator and a different crank to suit. The alternator cover is obviously different but I'm not sure if there are any changes to the LH crankcase half.
Thanks for that Derek, that’s what I discovered with the part numbers. I can’t see any difference in the Lh case from pics. It’s just that the ie cases seem more available
Different alternator and crankshaft also, doesn't use the same ignition pickups although the mounting points may still be there? but you'd need to check. I had an ST2 engine that I bought for parts, sold the bottom end to a guy in Ireland to use in a Monster that had smashed the case due to a chain break. They were basically the same but, despite having a different alternator the ST2 is still a single phase so the fittings are the same plus, it still has the (redundant) mounting points for the SS/Monster ignition pickups - as does, IIRC my 916.
Given that they shared many parts in many engines then probably so but I wouldn't know for sure. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon?
I have a96 900ss engine I started stripping last week, the alternator side stuff is off so far and cams out but otherwise I think it's all complete. What I have found inside so far looks to be in very nice condition. I haven't seen it running so don't know what heads/bores/pistons are like yet. I can let you know what I find at any stage you like, let me know.
