  1. Today’s ride was 58 miles, it was 27 degrees the hottest day yet. Tomorrow is a rest day so only 30 miles then we need to maintain the bikes. Current mileage total is 658, hoping to get to a thousand before I return to the UK.

  3. When I was much younger a mate owned a car similar in shape to that 4 but I’m sure it was a Simca or some such had the gear shift just under the centre of the dashboard.

We’ve seen a few of the Renault 4 on our travels.

  4. I loved the back doors on the Renault four, possibly Guinness book of records for smallest opening rear doors. the best cars have already been made.

  5. A short but painful 40 miles today, hottest part of the day 29 degrees.

We were forced to have a front wheel corrected today as the spokes were getting loose and creating a death wobble. Found a very small bicycle/motorcycle repair shop. We were only charged a fiver and the old gentleman did it there and then. IMG_9802.jpeg

Then off we popped to our destination of Tsuruga and encountered a ‘snow monkey’.

Tomorrow is back to our usual 50 plus mileage.

Harley piccie, we actually saw a RD250/350 LC today but he was moving the other way.

  7. 54 miles today to the uninhabited village of Imber inside the Army training area, open just a few days a year. Prawn sandwich at Warminster before the ride in to the headwind all the way back to Wilton.

  8. Gutted, left Uno this morning to climb out of the plain, 26 miles and possibly 1500metres of vertical climbing and the road had been severely damaged by a landslide. There was no way through or around, looks like we’re going to be forced by circumstance to ride along the coast.

A roundabout, only the fourth one we have encountered. The Japanese have usually a set of lights or on minor roads a stop line on all roads that intersect which is pretty baffling.

Encountered a Deer in the road.

  14. You’re probably half way through now but why not start your own dedicated thread about this tour. Most likely a lot of people don’t read the cyclist thread but would be interested to see and hear about Japan.
Whatever you decide, keep the updates and pictures coming, it’s great to see and I’ve had several conversations recently about visiting Japan. It’s high on my list but next for me I think will be Vietnam.

    Thanks for posting.

  15. Didn’t post yesterday as we were absolutely smashed from a 62 mile ride from Uno to Tonami. This was our second attempt at leaving this valley, we decided it best to check the road was passable by asking a local. We happened across a Harley rider cleaning his bike out in the Sun, he confirmed the road was ok to ride. His bike pictured below.

Next was the decent which was pretty terrifying as the road surface wasn’t that great. Then came an awful ride along the plains into a block wind all the way to the next long climb, 8 hours all in exhausted.

Today’s ride was a short 40 mile with just one short climb then a flattish ride to finish. Hello a 10mph block wind yet again oh joy. Toyama is known for its Tulips pictured below.

A lovely backdrop all day were snow capped mountains. This is from the top of the only serious climb today.

  16. I’m very close to the end now, I return the 30th.
I did consider putting it in another thread but thought better of it TBH.
It certainly is a very interesting place to visit, I can’t compare it to Vietnam having not visited.

Both Harley and Kawasaki are the most prevalent large capacity bikes we see. They’ve certainly sold a lot of the Z900 for sure.
