Bagged A Minichamp Model At A Bargain Price

  1. I've several models I have collected over the years, some by New Ray (1/6 scale 999 and a 1/6 scale Capirossi Moto GP bike) as well as a 1/6 scale Minichamps 998R. Today I managed to land this 1/12 scale Minichamps model of the 2000 996 Foggy WSBK, which is the bike my current steed is supposedly modelled on. These are selling for close to £200 and up to £350 for a perfect, clean boxed example, which mine by and large is, BUT, it has some signs of bubbling on the tank which reduced the price down to £23.00 (at least that was my winning bid and I think is an absolute bargain, given the market).

I might see if I can have the paint corrected, as it looks like a common problem on some of Minichamps models, where the metal surface underneath the paint most likely was contaminated or not cleaned properly before paint was applied and has, over time, caused the paint to lift. It's not that unsightly so I might just live with it for now, with a view to correcting it in future. There is also a very opportunistic seller in New Zealand who has four 1/6 scale immaculate boxed Minichamp models for sale. One is a John Reynolds 2001 996, a Bayliss 996, a Frankie Chili Poggipolini 998R 2002 and Troy Corser 996 WSBK. Problem is they are listed at just under £2000 EACH!! Too rich for my blood but definitely on my wish list as well as a Pocher 1299S (which are huge).

There are a number of decent 1/6 scale Minichamps models on Ebay at the moment that I am keeping my eye on, at anything from £200 to £450, so they do crop up from time to time and they rarely lose their value, as they are becoming harder and harder to find.

Paint defects can be seen here on the tank. It's not too bad but I will eventually get it corrected. Overall, for what I actually paid it's not a bad example, given these models often fetch ten times more on the secondhand market.

In its new home, alongside an immaculate 998R 1/6 scale model I bought over a year ago for a steal.

  2. Used to be £40 per model. Then doubled to £80 now just silly. Nice model that one. Was released before I started my collection.

  3. The early Minichamps where better quality/detail from around 2011? they used another manufacturer and not as good.

  4. That's a nice example for the money. I have seen damaged models go for more than that. Nice collection of models

  5. Paint lifting off a badly prepared metal surface; on a Ducati. Shock horror :p:D:D:D
Sounds just like my old Mutley 1200:upyeah:

  10. Lovely collection you have there. Of them all I would say the Chili Poggipolini is probably the rarest of them all. As I said earlier, in pristine condition (both bikes and their boxes) they are worth a small fortune but even if all were 'average' I would say that little lot has got to be worth between £2000-£2500. A relatively unblemished 1/6 scale Ducati can fetch £400 upwards. If it's immaculate then obviously much more.

  11. The Bostrom replica model is quite rare too

  12. Wish Minichamps would bring out a Bautista V4R, though I do love the Bayliss and Bostrom ones VTwin Dave has. Ever so slightly envious!

  13. Something very satisfying about a Minichamps model, I have the collection of Sport Classics but unfortunately the exhaust in the GT snapped.
Anyone recommend a glue, tried the usual brands but nothing works on the painted parts.

  14. Superglue very sparingly applied

  15. That’s the trouble with Superglue you just need too much of it to stick when all you need on a small part like a mirror is a nats eyelash. Also it doesn’t stick acetate, painted surfaces and makes clear plastic milky..

  16. Epoxy resin is probably your best bet. A well known brand such as Araldite (2 part adhesive) and some way to support the part in question until it fully cures.
