999 alternator casing removal questions

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by gray, May 25, 2012.

  1. Hi All,

I am new to this forum and wanted to ask a question, my 999 has developed a rather persistant leak from the alternator casing, where the previous owner had, for some bizarre reason clamped a earth cable in an attempt to create a sound earth point for the alarm (dont ask why) i have since remade this properly and earthed it correctly to a suitable point on the chassis, my question is this, does this case have a gasket, as i am about to crack it apart, i hear that permatex grey is the best sealent but cannot find this in the UK, do loctite do an alternative?
finally, i suspect at some point this case has been repaired with liquid metal around the front sproket area (possibly as a result of a chain snap) so i am anticipating the case falling to bits as i pry it off:eek:, there are only one or two for sale on Ebay US, is there anywhere n the UK i could get hold on one.

    thanks all

  2. The left hand casing has no gasket, get a tube of sealant from your friendly Ducati dealer. Secondhand casing if needed should be relatively easy to find from fleabay or other breakers - try Jim at Bikenders in Essex.

  3. It's just gasket seal - Threebond

You'll probably need a case puller as the alternator magnets etc will that casing stuck solid.

  4. +1 on Threebond, amazing stuff!

Get yourself one of these as well to prevent any further engine case disasters...

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

The casing will either pull straight off - or need a puller... easily made yourself if you are that way inclined - or plenty on eBay? :upyeah:

  5. Maybe a Wanted ad on here?

  6. Threebond 1215 is the recommended gasket but it's hellishly expensive. I've been using Loctite 5699 for some years now and never had an issue.

A puller is a doddle to make using a small piece of steel bar, two M6 bolts and one M8. It will make the job a lot easier.

  7. Thanks Guys, got it off in the end and made a puller as directed, im gonna try bikenders tomorrow to see if he as a alternator/stator case, if not a pal of mine is quite handy with the Tig, so ill let him have a go, does anyone know of a near enough match for this slightly off grey/silver finish on this case if its tigged ill need to etch prime and respray the area and wanted a good finish.

  8. Get it from your Ducati dealer - it's not that expensive.

  9. A tube lasts for ages, too! Gaskets are a fortune, in comparison it aint that dear...

What other cases would fit? Am I right in thinking there should be a list of bolt-on alternatives from other SBK dukes?

  10. I use the blue instant gasket that I have used from year dot . Put it on, join the two surfaces slightly, leave it for an hour then tighten everything up. Never had a leak in many years. My 1960 Norton 99s didnt even leak.
