Far be it for me to laugh at others problems but............................. 47 pages of posts on one problem!
my mate had same issue with his brand new 1200gs, clutch was dragging and he found it hard to stop as it kept pushing, icing on the cake was when he took it to Vines put it on the centre stand, started it up and put it into gear, the wheel started spinning with cltch fully in, and he put his foot on the wheel, nearly losing it, Vines said that it would need splitting and new clutch etc, but with less than 200 miles on clock he said Keep it........... and they gave him a new one
I took one for a test ride the week before i test rode the Multistrada (which is now having it's first service today). The gearbox on the GS felt worse than an aging Massey Fergerson tractor. The other only thing I preferred on the GS was that Icould touch the ground easier than on the Mutley. Each to their own I suppose. Deaks
Don't laugh too loud boys...don't forget you're on a Multistrada!!! People in glass houses etc. The BMW boys have quite rightly gone into fits of rage that some (not all) of their bikes have a clutch drag problem which can cause crunches into first and not too sweet changes in to 2nd or 3rd. They have moved from a dry clutch to a wet slipper clutch and have picked up what you tend to get with most wet clutches due to sticky oil drag between the plates, not all I add, but most of my bikes with wet clutches have also crunched in to 1st. Most of the BMW boys have never met a wet clutch before. BMW are sending out parts to fix those which exhibit this to reduce the quantity of oil the clutch is exposed to. Seems to me BMW owners have low levels of tolerance when they were expecting a no fault bike from BMW...good on them actually... but was there ever a no fault bike? Even Yamaha's latest 850 triple MT 09 has a problem with a jerky throttle when coming off over run, and they don't come higher quality than Yamaha. In all other respects BMW have done a stunning job in moving the GS performance away from the old school GSs. My 999S clutch is perfection but I can't see BMW going for a dry open clutch, can you?
Only tried an 1150 GS, gears crunched on ALL gear changes. Clutch needed strong hand. Brakes were horrid. No wonder they are referred to as tractors, its not a fair comparison though....some tractors have a decent gearbox:wink:
J biker, just to clarify, the 2013 air/water cooled GS is as far from being an 1150 GS as a Multi is from a push bike. Additionally the clutch lever is super light and it has Brembo brakes (I think the same as the Multi). Just trying to keep a informed balance here. I hate to see good bikes of any make rubbished.
I had my GSA12 for a little over 2 years. It failed on me twice, the finish was shocking and the brakes were a constant bugbear of poor stopping performance that was never fixed. I've just ticked over my 3rd year with the MTS. It's done twice the mileage, still scrubs up ok, and whilst there have been niggles, they were sorted in a reasonably prompt fashion. More importantly, it's never failed on me. On that basis, I shall proceed to laugh my backside off
changed from GS to fireblade when GS ESA shock went and 9 weeks later it was still off the road. That said BMW paid 2k for my taxis. When fireblade was nicked went to Mult, now i am in tears 18k miles of fun and its falling apart :-(
Fully aware of that and just having a laugh. That said, it was VERY bad, even allowing for the age/year of build.
Just having a laugh mate, nothing serious. Plenty of people do it at our expense. At least their back brake works
Yeh, I know Neil, BMW and Ducati both have their sniggering detracters, but being a fan of both I can say that they are both under rated by most bikers. I was at a bike meet last Thursday on my 999S and a group came up to me and enquired if I was with the RAC and if not they would advise it ha ha ha ....idiots.... see what I mean?
Well not only is the BMW GS having problems but their much touted K1600 is also. The K1600 is plagued with electrical switch problems and leaky water pumps not to mention the noisy driveline/engine and squeaky front ends that aren't being fixed. Other than that they are fantastic bikes to own!!!Rick
My forecast is a lot off Multis coming to the fore with knackered heads, I loved my Multi but couldnt keep it beyond warranty, does any Multi owner reckon they will have it in a few years time trouble free?
Who knows...I'm certainly intending to keep mine for a good few years. Fuelling is now sorted, no electronic suspension to go wrong. If the heads do go in the reasonable future I shall be making loud noises at Ducati along the lines of "known issue, substandard quality".
Sorry Doodle but I wouldn't be happy with " known issue, substandard quality" on my £15,000 bike. I love riding my Multi but I'm now having doubts about any long term future with it (anything beyond warranty). I have a feeling that if I treated my Multi like my mate treats his GS1200 it wont be working in two years time. I think it's a hell of a thing when people are writing on this forum hoping that, Audi management are going to improve build quality and fix known issues.
'broke' agree with your statement. I'm the 2nd owner of mine so paid under the new price (not by much mind). 2 yrs and 5 mths old now and my dealer has spent £3500 replacing defective and/or poorly performing parts. He of course puts the claims in to Ducati UK but it's a lot of money someone down the line is having to find which really shouldn't be happening on a bike in this price bracket! I love my bike when it's working but always have at the back of my mind what else is going to fail, be disconnected or half fixed next!
So the third year's warranty is a bit of a no-brainer at £300 I think. Has anyone bought one? By the way the Multi as at least a thousand times more fun and rewarding to ride than the GS IMHO. I rode two hired air-cooled GS 1200s a total of 6,000 miles round the USA on two 10-day holidays so feel qualified to say that the Multi, on which I have done 8,000 miles since April 20 this year, is an infinitely superior long-distance bike. And when you stick it into sport there is simply no point in making any comparison between the two bikes, such is the Multi's superiority.
