just resurected a 95 600ss ,bad ebay purchase ,serviced belts shims etc ,fitted dynojet kit that really smoothed out low speed jerkyness, bike has a couple of foibles ,firstly loud piston slap that quietens to acceptable after a run of around 10 miles,i have hammered the bike uses no oil ,not got worse or gone bang ,checked cam nut etc all seems ok ,how long do these engines keep rattling on for ,performance seems as good as the last 600 i rode maybe a bit better.next issue is the speedo is wildly optimistic ,mileometer seems reasonably accurate ,speedo is 10 mph fast at 30mph ,about right at 60 to 70 mph ,but goes haywire above 80 ,i have seen 130 indicated ,if only it was true. are these typical 600 ss issues or just character building italian design flaws.bike is being typical ducati ,reg rec packed up first week ,fitted honda one so now charging ,now got sticking rear master cylinder ,bloody ducatis ,if it didnt look so dam good or sound like god snoring when giving it a handfull i would chuck it in a skip.ha ha
Speedo error doesn't surprise me, but you could try pulling the inner out, wipe it and grease it, plus give the outer a good dose of WD40 and allow it to drain before you stick the inner back in.....don't over lube it though, because it could find it's way into the speedo head. Out of curiosity, what size front tire? Should be a 120/60... I know someone on here has a spare rear master cylinder......if you need one stick a post in Wanted.......he might let it go. AL.
The 600 ss engine is bullet proof, They have been thrashed and abused around many race tracks in the last 7 years and still going strong!
Mine never had any problems that I read about. In the 3 years I had her she never let me down. Started first time everytime. She came with an alarm which soon went. I must have struck lucky
thanks for the replies ,sorted the mastercylinder ,stripped it cleaned it ,it was the silly plastic sleeve bit that had gone tight ,as for speedo fault going to try giving the cable a good clean up ,bike had been stood a while when i got it ,plus none of its previous 10 owners seem to have serviced it much.believe it may have done a bit of track action at some time in its life.
