Starter button sticking

  1. The starter button fails to pop out when the red kill switch is lifted, on my 3 month old multi,
this was just before setting off on friday for a long weekend in northumberland and scotland,
The engine still starts almost automatically as soon as the kill switch is lifted with ignition on,
it has to be in neutral or with the clutch in so not really a big safety concern,
I does freeze all other functions like trip and power mode ,,showing heated grips all the time,
    Is this common,,,forest

  2. Get some switch lube 'electrical contact cleaner', not wd40.
I think this has been reported before,

Try to only get it in the gap around the switch, may mark paintwork,

  3. silicon spray should do the trick.

  4. Sorry I made the assumption that we've got a local corrosion issue on the contact materials.
I assume from this advice the reason for the "stick" is good old fashioned "plastic on plastic" friction?
Can someone confirm what the issue is?

  5. The problem for me seems to be that the starter button gets skewed when retracted back into the housing when the kill switch covers over it. When the kill switch is retracted back my bike starts itself! The only way to stop it is to try a flick the starter button to the side so it pops out and doesn't make the electrical contact.

I am not convinced therefore that silicon lube will fix this. As the bike is only a few months old the dealer can sort it. Interested to hear I am not alone though on this one.

  6. Thanks for the replies, i did undo the switch from the handlebar and it looks perfect,
the button seems to be binding on the housing at the last bit where it pops out but is otherwise free moving,
I have contacted italia moto lincoln, they have ordered a switch just in case and will check the now jerky throttle grip action which has got worse despite lubing it,, forest

  7. Hit it with a hammer :upyeah:

  8. Mine done the exact same a few weeks ago. I got mine in July.

I took a quick run into DG and they kindly stripped and lubed it up for me.

If it occurs again they will order me a new switch.

My issue started just before first service when the heated grubs stuck on and after a few weeks the bike started itself soon as the bike was powered up.

Took DG less than an hour to sort out under warranty.

I'm sure your own dealer could do the same.

  9. Same thing on my gt went back to dealer several times in the end new switch

  10. A couple of times this week I have pushed the starter switch down to kick the electrics into life and nada.

After three of four attempts hey presto we have life.

Before I have a moan at the dealers (going in next week to get heated grips fixed) does anyone know the expected life of the battery in the key? Could be something as simple as that which would make me look a bit of a knobb.

So to date (6 months 5.5K) rear wheel sensor, centre stand, heated grips have all gone kaput ..... confidence in Italian engineering dipping

  11. I took my bars off to replace with the Black GT ones, after putting everything back together my starter was sticky. I just loosened the screws just a touch and it was normal again.

  12. I don't think they use great quality batteries in the keys, plus when you buy replacements the more reputable sources warn of short shelf life on that style so no point buying more than 1. I replaced mine after just a couple of months, but the new one has been fine for close to 3 years now.

Having said all of that, you should get a warning on the dash that the battery is starting to get low, so it's unlikely to bethe cause of your current problem - get the dealer to look at the switch...

  13. Great!
I got rid of my Diavel because of all the issues I had with it, now Ive gone and bought another Ducati with issues - possibly!

  14. An update to the sticking switch, it was replaced no fuss, and software updates done,
also had the 14 t front sprocket fitted ,giving it a run sunday,,, forest

  15. This must be a repair as needed item, my 2014 at 900 miles just had this switch stick when I was heading up to get the first sevice done. Ironically a day after I first washed it. I thought soap may have gotten into the switch housing but the dealer took it apart and cleaned & lubed it. Worked fine for a day and it did it again today, I used a screwdriver to pry a little up on the button and it popped up. I may have to disassemble it myself and try fixing or head back to the dealer. Not everyone has this issue apparently so I guess it's hit or miss, maybe a bad run of buttons?

  16. Yep, had mine replaced at 1200 miles on my 2014 model

  17. Seems a lot of people are "popping into their dealers" to get jobs sorted but in some cases such as my own the round trip will be about 130 miles which is not ideal for a quick fix.

  18. Mine has been replaced, supposedly, has stuck since, 63 bike

  19. Round trip for me is about 185 miles with the threat of heavy traffic . There is a close dealer but not the one where i bought the bike.
