How many rings you got showing. 996 related

  1. Just been out for a quick spin dry conditions. Not ridden it many miles but I feel the front end is little high it does not drop into the corner just as I like. How many rings on the forks have you showing above the top yoke. ?
Its a bit strange judging the rings showing on the inside of the yoke toward the middle the number of rings showing is 3 on the outermost side the number is 4. Anybody got there figures. :upyeah:

  2. 5 viewed from side (outside) They don't like slow tight bends.

  3. same as my 916. 3 on the inside, 4 on the outside.the top yoke slopes - never thought too much about it before as just check mine on the outside.

9*6 don't tend to "just drop into corners" - you have to work at it and muscle it down. Unless you have triangular profile front tyre. The steering was designed to work with pointy slicks

  4. I would have said 5 on the outside was about correct,:upyeah: not much more or I think you would get the feeling of tucking in slow corners. 5 will do for me. Cheers. Regards Ken.

  5. Moved to Superbike

  6. Could it also be the fork oil level.I recently had a full service on my bike including fork service. It feels higher at the front now despite the fork settings being the same.

I don't like it as it feels like my old KTM 625 supercomp now (higher, not so much feel or speed of intial turn in) so will ask what can be done when I get my new wheels fitted and check rear ride height also.Much preferred it pre fork service which is odd.

  7. I have new oil in mine I will check the bikes measurements in the morning, Standard settings say 244mm from top of btm yoke to top of fork leg. If mine is 244 I will still consider dropping by one ring. I will keep you posted. Regards Ken.

  8. Could also be tyre choice, I found my SS on old knackered tyres needed plenty of counter steering to get it weaving around country lanes, now with new rubber on it feels completely different, almost as if all the steering geometry has been altered.

  9. Magnesium Race wheels and R&T Ohlins made my 916 turn on a sixpence.

  10. If it didn't you'd want your money back, I bet that lot that wasn't cheap!

  11. I had PVM wheels and upgraded Ohlins on the Aprilia. 1 hartside.jpg I would trust that in any corner. But NO way I spending money like that again.

  12. Nope but its been the best upgrade i have ever made. Just wish I could do it to my 1198 as well.

916 is going radial too now as I am swapping my 40mm caliper mounts with a fella that has the radial mounts, so soon it will brake on a sixpence too.

I learnt from this that go faster mods for me are pointless but handle and brake better mods are the way for me to get more out of the bikes.

  13. I put the forks and radial brakes off a Duc 999 on the Ape. They were very good. Like you the best money spent Handling and brakes:upyeah:

  14. Also having the ohlins forks and rear shock set up for my weight by someone who knows what they are doing (HM Racing) helped a lot too.

  15. I use MCT of Stowmarket he really does know his stuff. Mind you I can set most things up myself now. However any internal work he gets.:upyeah:

  16. 5 outside, 4 inside works well for me.

From new was setup 4 outside, 3 inside - dropping it that 5mm makes it turn-in better.

  17. Cheers for that my thinking exactly :upyeah: it will be done in the morning.

  18. Shorten your arms? Asides from stopping your knuckles dragging, it will also give the impression that you've dropped the forks a bit.

  19. :upyeah:

Ill ask JHP about this as my bike is back there soon for some more work.Ive got magnesium DP triple clamps that change the offset but can defo feel the difference since fork service.

Got some 999R ohlins fork feet, carbon fender,15mm offset disks and HPK's when I can be arsed to pull my finger out and get em fitted.Ive also got some Cycle Cat Ohlins R&T Radial fork adapters spare if anyone is interested .

  20. you could always try altering the forks rake to 23.5 degrees if you haven't already. Don't forget to move steering damper to forward position tapped hole though plus steering lock will no longer work.
