Hi dave...im kind of keepin all the bits and pieces i change as i may sell the bike later in the year.. Craig
Stump, Your bike looks very clean and original. Interestingly, the 748 was introduced for 1995 however three BPs and one SP were actually built in 94. If this bike is one of these built in 1994 it is an extremely rare little thing. One of the three of the four, if you get what I am saying. If it is a 94 it should have a very low engine number, they started at ZDM 748 W4 000001. Billy.
OOOH.... Stump, you should have a look and let us know, sounds like you have a really rare bike there, lovely.
Yes Phil, it'd be good to find out! I just took my little 98 SPS out for a 25 mile ride, 350 miles now on the engine which I rebuilt myself with new bearings, rings and things. Its been mucked about with a bit but its tidy and now it goes really well. Suffered the loose alternator rotor saga and when I got it all to bits the crank plug was loose too! It seems quite revvy, its doing 7K at 90mph, is that right? The 600 is doing the ton at those revs... All the sprockets are standard..Maybe the rev counter is a bit off? Great bikes.
The power on our (I have one too) 600ss is 8K whereas the 748 is 11K. Beleive me there is a HUGE difference in the machines.
Yep, the 748 is all about the 8500-11k zone (with careful warming up of course), it's a rev happy engine. I believe on the 916/996 it's more like 7k-9500rpm where it works best but others will know more as I haven't owned the bigger engined sibling. My 848 evo wants to be revved hard though, it's only happy above 5k rpm.
Stump, if you are keen to work out exactly when it was built if you look carefully on the frame cross member just behind the vertical cylinder under the front of the seat you will find the date stamp for the frame. On the plastic panels (if original) there are usually manufacture date markings indicating the dates they were made. The dates should all be within a few weeks of the frame date. For example my UK spec MY02 was first registered April 2002 but has a frame dated 28 May 2001 and all the panels were June/July 2001.
