Background - I'm putting my 2010 848 on the track... I normally run middle of the pack in the intermediates group on my 1999 748... My mate recommended putting on an Ohlins TTX rear shock... Thoughts? I'll be looking for a second hand one, I presume that a 1089 / 1198 unit is the same as 848?? Thanks, Bob
Bradders, Thanks for quick clear response... I'm already looking on ebay now... Slight thread drift, but what about the front? My Mate recommended putting in new internals, but they seem pricey... Thinking about putting in complete Ohlins front end then selling my current set?? Thanks, Bob
If you get a set at the right price ohlins are a big improvemnet. But tbh you can provably get a fantastic set ip for £6-800 of ktech internals and rebuild. If you can find a used sstk kit thats supposed to be better than stock ohlins forks. AFAIK the restricting factor in std forks is the valves.
Thanks, I'm seeing K-tech internals for about £1k and full Ohlins for £800... so a bit confused... No great rush as bike won't be on the track till march... Bob
If your after a std ohlins rear, there's a tatty looking one just popped up on ebay, not too bad a price.
Thanks, a bit tatty but could get it serviced and new spring... But... the advantage of TTX, more adjustment options I suppose??? Cheers, Bob
Its just 'better' as in more finite adjustment, and you can get at the rebound rather than thru that stupid hole at the bottom! Oh and preload by knob.
You'll get better performance out of valving/reworking the stock forks than simply dropping in a set of OEM Ohlins. Probably work out cheaper to. K-tech are good, but also Maxton and Kais are very good to. Same goes for the rear. The TTX is a nice shock, but out of the box the OEM unit is compromised as it needs to work over a wide range of scenarios/rider weights.... Again, unless you want the Ohlins stickers take a look at Nitron. They are built to order in the UK and are fully rebuildable. You may even be able to get the stock Showa reworked and save some £'s There's nothing wrong with Ohlins whatsoever, but if you're swapping in OEM parts, they still need reworking to get the best from them.
Looks like a good price to me ?Special Offers - motorcycle suspension products at crazy cheap prices!
Ohlins TTX rear shock is the way forward just make sure you have the right NM spring for your weight Ohlins front internals will also give you true feedback from the front with the correct oil and airgap does us well in the 848 challenge the only thing i would say is you want cheaper units K tech will give you better service support
At inters pace I'd save my money and have more trackdays tbh, I've raced my Ducs on standard suspension front and rear and it's very good, a lot of fast group riders can't go quicker than the dd lap records at some circuits set on road tyres with 60hp, of course if you're minted then spend away
I'm with Couchy on this one. Been running my 848 in Inters and Fast group, both UK and Spain, for 3+ years on standard suspension and never had an issue or a squeeky moment. Having said that, Ohlins do look the business...
Many thanks for recent replies... Long winded reply, and maybe slightly off topic, but... Valid comments about current pace no warranting shock upgrade. One of my best mates who I ride with says the same... Not minted, but have some spare cash / donations for the NLR endurance race (just planning to do the 6 hour race at donnington). We entered No Limits Cup in 2010 / 2011. We were running third in our class on the 1999 748 (possibly second?) at Cadwell with an hour to go when when we had an off [Endex]. I was the slowest of our riders; but the other guys must have been quick to make amends for my pace and get us up the front; so the suspension upgrade is not just for me... Part of the upgrade is a confidence thing. I had an off at Gerrards at Mallory in 5th - gear not place! on the 748; and after that I like to know that all is in top shape... I've bought a TTX shock off eThief and am about to get it serviced and re-sprung... Not sure where I'll be running this year. In my youth I used to run in the fast group; but then had a few years off and can't match that pace now... (yet :smile. I did Valencia and Pembrey last year on the 1999 748 BP and got a bit pi***d off taking bigger bikes in the bends only to be taken back on the straight. This brought out the red mist and made me go for the overtake earlier in the circuit; often when it really was not on... So, for this year the 2010 848 is the bike of choice... My mate is going from his 2000 748 to his much newer 675... Not sure where we'll end up, but hopefully at the front of the inters, or maybe squeeze into the quicker group... This year we're doing Brno with NL; it's the European circuits where I've really noticed to lack of grunt of the 748; especially Valencia and Portimao... Next post will be back on topic ! Rgds, Bob
getting shock serviced by stp... Only found then recently when out walking the dog... All good so far and highly recommended... STP Motorsport Bob
