there are so many to choose from :- The Indians send signals From the rocks above the pass The cowboys take positions In the bushes and the grass The squaw is with the Corporal She is tied against the tree She doesn't mind the language It's the beating she don't need She lets loose all the horses When the Corporal is asleep And he wakes to find the fire's dead And arrows in his hats And Davy Crockett rides around And says it's cool for cats The Sweeney's doing ninety 'Cos they've got the word to go They get a gang of villains In a shed up at Heathrow They're counting out the fivers When the handcuffs lock again In and out of Wandsworth With the numbers on their names It's funny how their missus' Always look the bleeding same And meanwhile at the station There's a couple of likely lads Who swear like how's your father And they're very cool for cats They're cool for cats To change the mood a little I've been posing down the pub On seeing my reflection I'm looking slightly rough I fancy this, I fancy that I wanna be so flash I give a little muscle And I spend a little cash But all I get is bitter and a nasty little rash And by the time I'm sober I've forgotten what I've had And ev'rybody tells me that it's cool to be a cat Cool for cats Shake up at the disco And I think I've got a pull I ask her lots of questions And she hangs on to the wall I kiss her for the first time And then I take her home I'm invited in for coffee And I give the dog a bone She likes to go to discos But she's never on her own I said I'll see you later And I give her some old chat But it's not like that on the TV When it's cool for cats It's cool for cats
The festival was over and the boys were all planning for a fall The cabaret was quiet except for the drilling in the wall The curfew had been lifted and the gambling wheel shut down Anyone with any sense had already left town He was standing in the doorway looking like the Jack of Hearts. He moved across the mirrored room "Set it up for everyone" he said Then everyone commenced to do what they were doin' before he turned their heads Then he walked up to a stranger and he asked him with a grin "Could you kindly tell me friend what time the show begins ?" Then he moved into the corner face down like the Jack of Hearts. Backstage the girls were playing five card stud by the stairs Lily had two queens she was hoping for a third to match her pair Outside the streets were filling up, the window was open wide A gentle breeze was blowing, you could feel it from inside Lily called another bet and drew up the Jack of Hearts. Big Jim was no one's fool, he owned the town's only diamond mine He made his usual entrance looking so dandy and so fine With his bodyguards and silver cane and every hair in place He took whatever he wanted to and he laid it all to waste But his bodyguards and silver cane were no match for the Jack of Hearts. Rosemary combed her hair and took a carriage into town She slipped in through the side door looking like a queen without a crown She fluttered her false eyelashes and whispered in his ear "Sorry darling, that I'm late", but he didn't seem to hear He was staring into space over at the Jack of Hearts. "I know I've seen that face somewhere" Big Jim was thinking to himself "Maybe down in Mexico or a picture up on somebody's shelf" But then the crowd began to stamp their feet and the house lights did dim And in the darkness of the room there was only Jim and him Staring at the butterfly who just drew the Jack of Hearts. Lily was a princess she was fair-skinned and precious as a child She did whatever she had to do she had that certain flash every time she smiled She'd come away from a broken home had lots of strange affairs With men in every walk of life which took her everywhere But she'd never met anyone quite like the Jack of Hearts. The hanging judge came in unnoticed and was being wined and dined The drilling in the wall kept up but no one seemed to pay it any mind It was known all around that Lily had Jim's ring And nothing would ever come between Lily and the king No nothing ever would except maybe the Jack of Hearts. Rosemary started drinking hard and seeing her reflection in the knife She was tired of the attention tired of playing the role of Big Jim's wife She had done a lot of bad things even once tried suicide Was looking to do just one good deed before she died She was gazing to the future riding on the Jack of Hearts. Lily took her dress off and buried it away "Has your luck run out?" she laughed at him. "Well I guess you must have known it would someday Be careful not to touch the wall there's a brand new coat of paint I'm glad to see you're still alive you're looking like a saint" Down the hallway footsteps were coming for the Jack of Hearts. The backstage manager was pacing all around by his chair "There's something funny going on" he said " I can just feel it in the air" He went to get the hanging judge but the hanging judge was drunk As the leading actor hurried by in the costume of a monk There was no actor anywhere better than the Jack of Hearts. No one knew the circumstance, but they say it happened pretty quick The door to the dressing room burst open a Colt revolver clicked And big Jim was standing there you couldn't say surprised Rosemary right beside him studying her eyes She was with big Jim but she was leaning to the Jack of Hearts. Two doors down the boys finally made it through the wall And cleaned out the bank safe it's said that they got off with quite a haul In the darkness by the riverbed they waited on the ground For one more member who had business back in town But they couldn't go no further without the Jack of Hearts. The next day was hanging day the sky was overcast and black Big Jim lay covered up killed by a penknife in the back And Rosemary on the gallows she didn't even blink The hanging judge was sober he hadn't had a drink The only person on the scene missing was the Jack of Hearts. The cabaret was empty now a sign said. "Closed for repair" Lily had already taken all of the dye out of her hair She was thinking about her father who she very rarely saw Thinking about Rosemary and thinking about the law But most of all she was thinking about the Jack of Hearts.
I don't want a pickle Just want to ride on my motorcycle And I don't want a tickle I'd rather ride on my motorcycle And I don't want to die Just want to ride on my motorcy-cle
I love David Byrne' lyrics which are often very clever, deeply ironic and repay careful study. Here's his take on Middle America in "The Big Country" from Talking Heads' "More Songs About Buildings And Food" I see the shapes, I remember from maps. I see the shoreline. I see the whitecaps. A baseball diamond, nice weather down there. I see the school and the houses where the kids are. Places to park by the fac'tries and buildings. Restaunts and bar for later in the evening. Then we come to the farmlands, and the undeveloped areas. And I have learned how these things work together. I see the parkway that passes through them all. And I have learned how to look at these things and I say, (CHORUS) I wouldn't live there if you paid me. I couldn't live like that, no siree! I couldn't do the things the way those people do. I couldn't live there if you paid me to. I guess it's healthy, I guess the air is clean. I guess those people have fun with their neighbors and friends. Look at that kitchen and all of that food. Look at them eat it' guess it tastes real good. They grow it in the farmlands And they take it to the stores They put it in the car trunk And they bring it back home And I say ... (CHORUS) I say, I wouldn't live there if you paid me. I couldn't live like that, no siree! I couldn't do the things the way those people do. I wouldn't live there if you paid me to. I'm tired of looking out the windows of the airplane I'm tired of travelling, I want to be somewhere. It's not even worth talking About those people down there. Goo Goo Ga Ga Ga Goo Goo Ga Ga Ga

Cautious Man - YouTube Bill Horton was a cautious man of the road He walked lookin' over his shoulder and remained faithful to its code When something caught his eye he'd measure his need And then very carefully he'd proceed Billy met a young girl in the early days of May It was there in her arms he let his cautiousness slip away In their lovers twilight as the evening sky grew dim He'd lay back in her arms and laugh at what had happened to him On his right hand Billy'd tattooed the word love and on his left hand was the word fear And in which hand he held his fate was never clear Come Indian summer he took his young lover for his bride And with his own hands built her a great house down by the riverside Now Billy was an honest man he wanted to do what was right He worked hard to fill their lives with happy days and loving night Alone on his knees in the darkness for steadiness he'd pray For he knew in a restless heart the seed of betrayal lay One night Billy awoke from a terrible dream callin' his wife's name She lay breathing beside him in a peaceful sleep, a thousand miles away He got dressed in the moonlight and down to the highway he strode When he got there he didn't find nothing but road Billy felt a coldness rise up inside him that he couldn't name Just as the words tattooed 'cross his knuckles he knew would always remain At their bedside he brushed the hair from his wife's face as the moon shone on her skin so white Filling their room in the beauty of God's fallen light
Bruce Springsteen - Brilliant Disguise (Original) 1988 - YouTube I hold you in my arms as the band plays What are those words whispered baby just as you turn away I saw you last night out on the edge of town I wanna read your mind and know just what Ive got in this new thing Ive found So tell me what I see when I look in your eyes Is that you baby or just a brilliant disguise I heard somebody call your name from underneath our willow I saw something tucked in shame underneath your pillow Well Ive tried so hard baby but I just can't see What a woman like you is doing with me So tell me what I see when I look in your eyes Is that you baby or just a brilliant disguise Now look at me baby struggling to do everything right And then it all falls apart when out go the lights Im just a lonely pilgrim I walk this world in wealth I want to know if it's you I don't trust cause I damn sure don't trust Myself Now you play the loving woman I'll play the faithful man But just don't look too close into the palm of my hand We stood at the alter the gypsy swore our future was right But come the wee wee hours maybe baby the gypsy lied So when you look at me you better look hard and look twice Is that me baby or just a brilliant disguise Tonight our bed is cold Im lost in the darkness of our love God have mercy on the man Who doubts what he's sure of
Dennis is a menace With his 'Anyone for tennis?' And he'd beseech me to come keep the score And Maude said, "Oh Lord, I'm so terribly bored" I really can't stand it anymore I'm going out to dinner With a gorgeous singer To a little place I know Down by the quay Her name is Patricia She calls herself Delicia And the reason isn't Very hard to see She said, God made her a sinner Just to keep those fat men thinner As they tumble down in heaps Before her feet They hang around in groups Like battle weary troops One can often see the Queue right down the street Because Patricia or Delicia Not only is a singer She also removes all her clothing For Patricia Is the best stripper in town And with a swing of her hips She started to strip To tremendous applause She took of her drawers And with a lick of her lips She undid all her clips Threw it all in the air And everyone stared And as the last piece of clothing Fell to the floor The police were banging on the door On a Saturday night in 1924 Take it away boys Well, Patricia was arrested And everyone detested The terrible manner in which She was exposed Later on in court Where everyone thought A summer's run in jail Would be proposed But the judge said "Patricia or may I say Delicia The facts of this case lie before me (Knock, knock, knock) Case dismissed, this girl was in her working clothes And with a swing of her hips She started to strip To tremendous applause She took off her drawers And with a lick of her lips She undid all her clips Threw it all in the air And everyone stared And as the last piece of clothing Fell to the floor The police were yelling out for more (More) On a Saturday night in 1924
You came twice last year like a Sears catalog,Cause your last boyfriend makes love like Boss Hogg, Well now you're seeing me but soon I'll have you seeing God, Cause girl I'll get you panting like you're Pavlov's dog, Like a DC-10: guaranteed to go down, But baby your black box is the one that I found, I'll give you the gift that keeps on givin' it won't cost you any money, Then she grabbed me by the ears and said kiss me where it smells funny. So down I go like I'm 2000 Flushes, I can tell I'm doing something right by the way that she blushes, She's one that's speechless, I'm the one that's tongue tied, She's thinking holy mackerel I'm thinking tuna on the side, There must be something wrong with Al Pacino's nose, Cause the scent of a woman is like rotten tomatoes, Yeah I'm snorkeling for clams and it doesn't matter if I wanna be, Don't come up for air until you kiss me where it smells funny. Drop my face below her waist and stay on third base, I can tell that the cherry's ripe by the way it tastes, Yeah I could make a lot of wine with the yeast I find inside her panties, And then drink it while eating out down at the Seafood Shanty, Drop my face below her waist and stay on third base, I can tell that the cherry's ripe by the way it tastes, Yeah I could make a lot of wine with the yeast I find inside her panties, And then drink it while eating out down at the Seafood Shanty.
