I’ve started putting the new front end on to my project this afternoon and after taking a few measurements it looks like I need some brake discs with a 15mm off set, am I right in thinking that the 748R had these; did any other model run them as well? Oh and does anybody have any for sale. Thanks.
I did look at that, I packed them out with washers to 5mm but didn’t like the look of the inner part of the disc sitting so far on the edge of the wheel lip. If you know what i mean. are these the badgers http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brembo-ty...pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item51b84689da
So I have looked at the part numbers for the 748R, 996R, 998R, 748RS, 996RS and 998RS and they are all different although they all start with 492.4. I have RS discs fitted to my 748R and I'm sure all the RS were 15mm offset as were the 996R and 998R which also all had 6 fixing holes. I spoke with a bloke from Brembo at the bike show in November and he said that bike disc design moves on every 2 or 3 years but if you have a pattern they could still have something in stock. Andy
I have 15mm discs on my 916, looked at spacers but they wouldn't work on my wheels (disc not centered by wheel, only the bolts). These should be 15mm offset; Ducati 748 R 2001-2003 Brembo Replacement Upgrade Front Brake Disc | eBay
Curiously same people selling discs for a 2000 748R £14 each cheaper. Is there a difference between the 2000 and 2001-3 model years and how on earth do they come up with a buy it now price of £218.81 each ? Andy
interesting, not sure i understand how that works? from what i found out (and this is by no means authoritative) any bike with that came with OEM Ohlins forks (so basically any of of the 'R' bikes) had 15mm offset rotors dif part codes depends on the carrier style i would have thought. some are lighter/thinner that others too some started life at 5mm some at 4.5 as long as it 320mm, has the 6 hole mount pattern and 15mm offset it should fit so androids list is about right AFAIK + maybe the paul smart GT/SC1000 i think there were some Aprillias too but not sure of model
this is is what I thought would happen with my wheel, dukedesmo did you run into this problem with the 3 spoke wheel? im thinking maybe the lip on the wheel that the disc sits on is different between the 3 and 5 spoke wheels, ie larger this is how some people can run the 5mm spacers? i don't know I could be wrong. im im just thinking out loud now but what about running something like a 848 front wheel and discs, anybody ever offered one to 748, 916 etc, what's the offset like in comparison? i like the idea of a pair of 848 wheels on it. anyone with a 848 fancy taking a measurement from disc to disc so that I know I'm in the area before I splash out on some cash?
Ok so I done some browsing and correct me if I'm wrong the 848 disc spacing is 130mm. so my next question is is there any weight saving to be had/lost over using the 848 wheel over the older 5 spokes? im currently using the 3 spokes but if the 5s are the better choice over the 848 then I'll buy new r discs now and swap them over when I buy some 5 spokes, other wise I'll try and buy a 848 wheel and discs combo now.
On my Marchesini wheel the lip on the right side is too small to work with a spacer - the disc would not be on the wheel, only bolted to the spacer. On the left side a spacer makes the disc bolts foul the speedo drive (although I'm not using one now). I didn't try the OEM 916 wheel but I think that has a wider lip and a spacer 'may' just work if you get low profile disc bolts to clear the speedo? but I wouldn't use the spacers, especially as discs are available that do the job properly. Only some of the Ohlins bikes used 15mm offset - 748R & (I think) 998R. 996R doesn't and neither do SP/SPS etc. and for this reason the 15mm offset discs are harder to find and more expensive than the 10mm, I have Brembo HPK but they don't make them in 15mm anymore but I also have a set of 748R discs as spares. An 848 (or 749/999/1098/1198) front wheel will fit and has 15mm offset discs but you lose the option of using a mechanical speedo as it's not cutaway for the drive. Actually I could use a newer wheel on my 916 (the forks are 1198) as I don't use the speedo anyway and have had to fit a spacer to fill the cutaway.
thanks for the info is very helpful. these should fit, shouldn't they? Viper Fully Floating Wavy Front Brake Discs For Ducati 2000 748 R T01-FL | eBay Im not bothered about the speedo drive as im not running that type anymore. Do you know if the 848 wheels are any lighter than the 5 spokes? if they are or the same weight then im just going to go down the 848 wheel and disc route. if they are heaver then ill get those discs and buy some 5 spokes at a later date.
Jay, Funcatronic's post has rung a bell, 2000 748 had Showa forks not Ohlins so I'm not sure it had a 15mm offset. might be worth asking the seller. Andy
If they really are for 748R then they would fit but I would double check the offset first as many sellers don't know the difference (witness the amount of ebay sellers offering rear wheels to suit both 848 & 1098 etc.) I don't know if the 848 wheels are lighter? but I would expect they should be unless you're comparing to aftermarket 5- spokes; these may be lighter due to being forged rather than cast or even magnesium rather than alloy but the OEM wheels should have got lighter as models progressed - try a pair of 916 3-spokes if you want heavy!
ok so iv just been out and took some measurements, the lip on the wheel is 6.5mm the disc is 4mm thick so with a 5mm spacer this leaves the disc sitting on only 1.5mm of lip, i don't think this is enough not with all the forces that go through the discs. so it has to ether be the proper discs or go the 848, 1098 etc way.
I have offset my callipers instead of discs. Putting 5mm on discs means they are off the centre hub and entire force is on bolts alone so No No. Offsetting callipers fixes that (unless you have monoblock when you are stuck on that idea).
i have radials so moving them is a no go. i don't know what to do now iv heard from people that have run with the spacers and had no problems at all with it but then others are saying don't do it??? iv also just found these iv emailed them asking if they have the 15mm offset. im looking at 6 bolts discs. can some one confirm that 749 discs are a 15mm offset and that they will fit a 848 wheel?
